Hey folks

So basically, I've just fired the game up for the first time in, at a guess, 2 years or so, aaaaand basically everything has changed and it's a bit confusing.

Everything looks different, a third of my mechs are invalid, all my skills and stuff are gone, I've been refunded a load of I don't even know what, there's a crap-ton of new equipment (and mechs, but I kind of expected that) and something called Solaris is plastered everywhere I look...

Can anyone give me a nice digestable, abridged idiot's guide to what the hell has happened? For reference, I think the last time I played was right around the time factions wars released.

Inb4 "read the patch notes" (which I got last time I tried this, only to find the game was borked at the time anyway so left it alone), I seriously don't have the time or inclination to read two years worth of patch notes!!

Thanks in advance! :)

P.S. I didn't leave because I was salty about the game, just kinda burnt out on it.

The skill tree has been completely replaced with a system that allows you to spend 91 skill points per mech chassis you own to try and upgrade some of its stats how you want it. You got refunded all of your old skill upgrades and the cost of modules (since they've been removed) in the form of $$$, skill points, and historic XP. I highly recommend looking up a guide on how to level your mechs before spending any of said XP, because the tree is admittedly pretty complicated, and it costs a lot of XP and $$$ to get SP.

There's a ton of new tech in the game because the era the game is set in jumped from the Clan Invasion to the Civil War era. Here's the update page for when that came out, where it lists what the new tech is in simpler terms: https://mwomercs.com/civil-war-update

And Solaris is a 1 vs 1/2 vs 2 arena mode with its own matchmaking system. It's pretty simple, but the builds you want to use in it are completely different from the builds you'd use in any other game mode, since they're focused on taking down 1-2 mechs as quickly as possible.

I know there's a lot more that has changed since you last played, but I have trouble remembering what HAS changed in that span of time because of it. Other folks here should be able to fill you in on the rest, and if you have any questions about any specifics, feel free to ask.

Oh, and before I forget, welcome back to the game!

General Skill Points or GSP are points you can apply to any mech.
Historical Skill Points are points you can apply to that specific mech.
Historical Experience is XP you can apply to that specific chassis, so if you have two Uziel 2S, you can apply it to either.

You can spend XP and C-bills to add more skill points to a mech. You can have a maximum of 91.

For more in depth guides, search the new player forum, or wait for Koniving to reply and provide one. He's pretty good about that.

You can check the civil war update page https://mwomercs.com/civil-war-update for a list of weapons added.

One thing of note off the top of my head. Engine size doesn't effect your mech's agility anymore. Instead they're by chassis. The skill tree has a mobility tree to boost this. But it's % based.

Edit: RestosIII beat me to it! Damn this work computer!

Solaris is a brand new 1 vs 1 game mode . It's fun fun fun .

Click your mechs and see why they are invalid , then do something about it .

The buy 3 variants of one mech to make it elite has been replaced by a skill tree kinda like diablo 2 and you only need one mech . You unlock 91 skill nodes to make your mech elite.

Amazing, thank you all! Couldn't have asked for it any clearer Posted Image

I'll have a read through the civil war update and some mech build trees as suggested, then start going through my invalid mechs and see if I can fix them (mostly light mechs affected), and then I guess I'll just dive into some matches and do some dying!

Interesting tip about engines not affecting agility anymore, I guess they probably tied the base agility to the default engine? Effectively nerfing most of my builds haha Posted Image

Also nice to hear Koniving is still doing his thing, the second I read his name I remembered him as the omnipresent forum guy from my heyday!

Edit: bonus question - historical skill points... can they no longer be earned as per the name suggests, meaning whatever I spend them on is final?

That is correct. If you use them, that's the equivalent of spending the XP you earned on your mechs back when you last played.

I too recently returned from an extended break, and I got a bunch of cbills and SP to spend on stuff, but there's one thing I learned the hard way about spending the skill points. Make sure to use your mech's historic SP before you spend any of the generic SP. I wasted quite a few generic SP on mechs that were fully and partially mastered, and now those mechs have way more than 91 SP unlocked. Always add the historic SP before you dip into your generic SP pool.

Interesting stuff, thanks - I've started speccing a few mech skill trees now (from only HSP) and, even with guides... skilling every mech is going to take ages!! Don't know how the really hardcore people with crazy numbers of mechs coped when this came out, I have 30 and that's daunting enough...

But, bonus question #2: what happens if I sell a mech that has HSP/HXP attached, is there any way to convert that to general? My thinking is since the whole "3 mechs for mastery" thing is gone, I may as well sell off the naff ones that were just there to make up the numbers and get some dolla back!

Once you get into the groove of skilling out mechs you can do it in a few minutes. That said I skill them up as I use them since I have 260+ mechs.

HSP and HXP can be used on any mech of that variant that you own now or buy in the future. GSP can be used on any mech you own or will own. Any Mech XP and Bought Skillpoints on a specific mech will be lost if you sell the mech.
