Never mind. I think I found the answer in another thread? Things still don't quite make sense, however...

Why? What doesn't make sense?
You grind a 1000 points and then get a cache with a decal and 3 pieces of crap. Rinse and repeat.

If it doesn't show up in inventory, log-out and back in and it should be there.
I got a engine in the ultra rare I picked up(not from 1k points, from the MC sale) but I thought it said "Standard 180" but apparently was "xl 145".
Only reason i know is i don't have any XL's laying around at all, and knew how many 180's I had/have (1).

Do you have handy a link to that thread? So far, I haven't found any explanation of the uses, limitations and restrictions of the current supply cache system.

What you need to know about Supply Caches as of the most recent patch:
1. Open them to receive what is in them.
2. They don't change at all when sitting in your inventory.
3. They cost nothing to open.
4. There are a lot of useless buttons on the page that shows you what you won. Ignore them.
5. There is no reason to NOT open a Cache the moment you earn one.

That helps. Thanks. The videos covering the older cache system caused my confusion.
One final question: Do the supplies remain in inventory to be used when new mechs are bought or are they specific to the mech in use when they are earned?

The content of supply caches is available for all your mechs. Single instances like cockpit items or bolt-ons can be used on one mech at a time (and changed to any other ofc), while decals are unlocked and can be used infinitely. Some bolt-ons however can only be used on certain chassis', due to them not fitting or the model not yet implemented for all mechs.

Follow these steps:
Log into the game.
Step 1. - Click "Inventory"
Step 2. - Click "Supply Caches"
Step 3. - Click "Open"
Step 4 . - Check the content of the Supply Cache that you have just opened
