I'm a returning player, and stopped playing just after the release of the first clans wave/pack, So a long time ago, apart from being familiar with the controls, I'm basically a newbie all over again.
Where do i start ok? I noticed I got alot of refunds from previous XP and modules etc from my old mechs because of this new skill tree system. Is this new skill tree locked to a single chassis, or does it apply to all variants of that mech type? So for example all Atlas?
Also I own alot of variants of mechs, I assume with this new skill system I can ditch old variants i don't use, or only ever used to make up the mastery trees?
What Mechs are considered good bad these days?
I own about 4 Atlas BH, D-DC, D and S variants.
3 Stalkers 3FC, 5M and M
Hunchback 4G, 4PC, GI, 4SP, and 4J (I really enjoyed Hunchbacks)
and I own 3 Firestarters SC, H and E.
Given I'm a keen Hunchback player, what's the IIC versions like? what's the verdict on those?
I'm not opposed to investing abit of cash into the game again, if my older mechs are abit rusty, What's the Mauler like as an assault? or Bushwaker Medium?
Any basic advice, all info much appreciated! Currently I'm overwhelmed, and spending more time trying to read up info, than play the game xD

Here we go...
The skill tree is locked to THAT INDIVIDUAL MECH...
So you could have 13 AS7-Ds... and skill all 13 out in unique ways... to have 13 AS7-Ds that play 13 different ways.
Fun!
(Not so fun is having to build up 13 Atlases from nothing).
The new tree gives you a reason to want to keep them, actually, but yes you could ditch old ones. Or keep them and skill them differently.
This really depends on the player's opinion. I have a lot of mechs (290+). The only one I consider to be bad (the Assassin), many others much better than I am seem to find it to be incredible.
So...yeah.
Firestarters "Grew up" a little bit. Heh.
But those are all good mechs still.
IS Hunchback: Tanky, flexible.
Clan Hunchback: Fast, jumpy, vicious glass cannon.
Least you'd think though strangely I have never seen one jump. Actually come to think about it over the last four months I haven't seen a single mech jump in MWO..... Huh. Weird.
Beware laser vomit. Also some scream of the screen shake from RACs.
Side note: All non-consumable "Modules" are found in the skill tree, such as Seismic Sensor (under Sensor Tree) and Hill Climb (under ....is it Mobility or Operations?)
Oh and think about your skill tree before committing to it (though you can go back and change things without losing much beyond the cost of unlocking other nodes as you can "Deactivate" nodes that you no longer want). You only get 91 nodes unlocked at any given time out of 200+,

Orion IIC durable, dependable, can be skilled to be faster I own only the Orion IIC-SK Sköl. I use it as an all rounder in QP and FP. One UAC-10, one ER PPC, one LRM-15, and a trio of ERMLs. I use MASC to get out of trouble or to quickly push a flank or rear action. 66.6 kph normally or 85.2 on MASC.
Arctic Wolf and Huntsman Heroes. Quick,JJs, single UAC-10s or twin LBX-2s plus 3-4 ERMLs or twin MPLs paired with twin ERSLs. Nasty little surprises at your back.
The hour is late and my allergies do not lend themselves to any extended coverage consider this a primer.

Wow guys thanks for the fast feed back. @Koniving thanks for the indepth reply. I guess thinking about it now, i can see how the different tree per variant helps diversify/specialise a mech even further now, So I guess I keep the extra variants.
Not sure where I will put my points yet obviously, I guess i'll just go completely 0 skillpoints, and try and work things out before commiting points to a mech, let alone a the tree itself.
I did notice in the new tutorial/academy thing and thought the Fire starter model seemed some what larger than i remember, almost mistook it for a new medium of some kind.
I guess i will take out my Hunchy for a spin, and see how i get on, completely out of sink on builds, armour heat management details, but i'll just assume the builds i have still are some what sane/viable.If I get a feeling for the Hunchy I might splash out on a Hunchie IIC see how that goes. Just from pure love of the mech.
Time to start learning and losing again!

Really push yourself on the practice maps especially Caustic Valley,Canyon Network, and Tourmaline Desert. Act like you have only 35-50 seconds to destroy each target. This will teach you heat management and self control before mistakes cost blood.

If you want to get really good at heat management and aiming in general, take a Clan laser boat into Terra Therma, and pretend you only have 20 seconds from first sighting to take out at least 2 components.

I appreciate the info guys, currently trying to get my ahead around what mechs i like to play. I think i need to put abit more time into Hunchbacks, as few times i tried them, they didn't really excite me like how i remember them, may have just been unlucky-- thinking of jumping back into my Atlas or Stalkers again, however since the addition of IS quirks, it seems like the Atlas variants I have aren't the optimal ones. Seems the K variant is best with its gauss cool down, and armour bonuses? all my variants are structure bonuses.
From what i can see I'm thinking Mrms? Heavy Gauss, and then lasers? maybe try them on my Boars head? or my Misery stalker
This viable? https://mwo.smurfy-n...4657a71dddee9f3
or ditch the lasers for PPCs?

I'm a big fan of Medium lasers. Personally, I feel the mediums over a single ppc. The real question is if the Heavy gauss'll be worth it.
