Before the sale ends I want to grab some hero mechs. Already got the Grinner. Any other good ones?

Deathstrike is arguably the best hero mech in the game, tied with Sleipnir (which isn't on sale). DenAirwalkerrr's list is a pretty good guide on what heros are good and what are bad, he has tabs in the google doc for IS and Clan heroes, with ratings on them.

I like the Centurion Hero Yen Lo Wang as well as the Pirate's Bane Locust... also the Black Widow Warhammer is solid.

Question is, why are some hero mechs just different or even entirely useless, while others are 30% better than the normal ones.

I got the Virago Hellbringer hero. Even unskilled and without the ECM Omni pod it's still really good. It'll probably be good earner.

That's actually easier to explain that you think....

In the early days of MWO, PGI didn't want cries of P2W, so they made Hero mechs either be lateral or downgrades when compared to what you could get with C-bills... Fast forward a coupe of years, and PGI stopped giving a damn about that, as no mech is truly one an I win button.

This is not generally true. In some cases it is a pay to lose but for the most part most are just on par with or by some fluke or recent meta somewhat better-than other variants (until the meta's gone / nerfed which happens more than people would like)

Deathstrike's only advantage over the other models is it features 6 energy hardpoints because it drops all missile hardpoints.

Sleipnir's arguably worse than its other variants in terms of quirks Hardpoint-wise, its only potential lead is 4 ballistics split 2 left and 2 right (at the sacrifice of missiles, which it has a single launcher in the CT). The head laser's also...awkward compared to the arm mounted energy weapons.

Generally unless the mech's loadout is canonically dictated, a hero is usually given either a combination of two other variants OR... they do that + slap on one hardpoint type that the others don't have (Misery and a ballistic for example; though technically that is a canon build setup).

Though I only have a hero from this year and only 4 from last year, I own almost all the ones before them. Only thing really pay 2 win is the Pirate's Bane Locust....

...and lets be honest, most mechs can one-shot it to death.

A few heroes have something unique about them. But that doesn't necessarily translate to an advantage. Granted in the case of Omnimechs, every new mech with an extra hard point, is a potential for more hard point inflation. It's kinda why I want to see IS Omnis. So we can get in on that hard point inflation ;3
