Not only is it the current heavy hitter 100 tonner ruining everyone's days, the Nightstar isn't an easy mech to do well with. It can really drag down the fun when you're 11 games into your new mech and you've done poorly because the mech itself is underwhelming.
That being said, I totally own and love both. Also, depends on what you're building them for.

The Anni is a pig that only works 1v1.
Skip 'em both.

That being said, it's not necessary to buy the package. You really only need one Annihilator to do everything you need to do (The hero is not worth it and the energy Annihilator is... not great).

Seriously, the Nightstar is so bad in my opinion that I have completely stripped all three of the ones I got with the Standard Pack when it was first released and I am honestly on the verge of selling them all off. The Nightstar is one of the very few Meck Packs I totally regret buying.
The Annihilator on the other hand is hands down the best 100 ton Assault mech in the game.

You need to get really trollish to make an Anni that isn't 1,000x superior to the best possible Nightstar build. The Anni actually makes 2 Nightstars, in its toilet, every morning before breakfast.

Imagine all 100 toners have THAT amount of armor and structure buffs.... make Assaults great again, and not only IS/ 100 tonners but ALL assaults.
What grinds me gears is the idiotic left torso hardpoints on the nightstars, they should be up, up, up in line with those right ones!

Get used to going 48 kph and you're unstoppable. Not that Nightstar goes significantly faster anyway, topping out at only 10kph faster with maximum engine which isn't really worth using.

PGI still doesn't understand the concept of buffing under performing mechs. Instead they take the lazy way out and nerf the outlier that's actually performing properly.

There are tons of issues with the Nightstar. My biggest issue is with the convergence of the arm mounted hard points. The community b*tched and moaned about the arms not being cockpit height so PGI stuck them straight out to the sides in the most awkward manner imaginable so half the time I find myself either shooting one arms worth of weapons into the side of a hill or the back of a friendly mech that isn't even viewable through my cockpit. I also agree about the weird torso placements as well.
Honestly the Nightstar should have been an exceptional IS Assault mech, I mean it has that same Marauder torso shape that should have meant excellent hitboxes but somehow PGI even mess up the hitboxes as well.
In any case, the Nightstar is kind of an abomination that at best might kinda, sorta be just below average if it is lucky.
Edit: Oh and yeah, I have to admit, the Annihilator is one of the few Assault Mechs that feel like an Assault mech. I understand why PGI did what they did for balance reasons but honestly, unless your in another Assault mech, there should be at least a little element of fear and caution involved when you come face to face with one and right now the Anny is the only Assault mech that generates that reaction in me.

The night star is so terrible I never even see it in game.
Honestly these days it's Mad Cat II, or Mad IIC, or a Clan Heavy. If you already own all of these you are buying hipster mechs instead of powerful choices.
