And I'm wondering what the hell happened to Frozen City. This was an obviously coastal city (there's sea going ships around the map) that was somehow suddenly hit with an ice age.

Likely it was a planet being kept alive by Star League-era technology (like these things) that fell apart once the tech could no longer be maintained.

i like the spaceport idea. with union classes and overloards everwhere. there are so many wrecked spacecraft everywhere but you never get to see them intact.

A spaceport with standing ships would also be nice, even if they don't interact with you...aka firing at you.
Add landing starting Dropships like we saw in the MW5M trailer where, at the end of the video, the dropship came down..think it was an Union class?

We have a very little spaceport in River City. Maybe they can expand that?

Are there other interesting places that are kinda unique to BT that could be turned into a map you can think of?
What about Starleague age Fortress or Braincaches. Royal Palaces kinda like the MW4(?) ones?

after watching the videos im still not impressed. i see too much canyon network. there are a couple nice touches but its really the same old map. and add to that the fact that its a snow map and you got more of the same. mech canadian online.

problem with this kind of thing is its too terrestrial. battletech takes place on other planets. and there isnt much diversity. id rather have used the grim tileset or another hodgepodge like rubellite oasis. perhaps another vitric forge style map for qp? its time for a new tileset with a more alien look. or a few more maps with seldom used tilesets (like terra therma or caustic).

tldr too much snow!

I was actually thinking they were going to do the Viridian Bog tileset on Canyon Network as their first 'remake' of a map as that was the one mentioned. That would still be cool to see.
We are not going to get drastic differences with the layout when they do this but the visual and environmental effects will give us a variation on the maps which is nice and there looks like there are a few additional changes in the features which will change it up even further.
The drop ship on the ramp, the overhangs in the canyon pass that will provide additional cover and make it more difficult to get out of those areas. Some of the ramps look bigger (wider).

Maps that have more of an alien terrain getting swapped to terrestrial one and terrestrial map swapped to an alien land scape will give the more vivid transformations.
Tourmaline Desert in the Viridian Bog tlleset for example. Water, trees and giant lillies would make that map look very different.
On the other side, take a map like Forest Colony and dress it up in the grey moon of HPG or the red rock of Vitric Forge and completely remove all that sense of 'life'.
Alpine Peaks done in the Terra Therma tile set? That would be a stark contrast.

There are some pretty interesting combinations.
Thrown in to that a few extra changes to the terrain, new features or features that are relocated.
It's nice.

What I would also like to see is some themed planets in Faction.
ie. It's a fight on Planet X which is a desert planet and therefore all the maps for that planet are desert themed.
Would help tie the battles together and create more of a sense that it is that planet we are fighting on.
For that, we need enough variations of the different maps in the same tilesets so I would be more than happy to see that done.

That would be interesting.
Large star port with numerous dropships waiting.
Seeing some Overlords and Unions even just stationary would be nice.

Alpine peaks with the big hill beeing a vulcano and lava flowing down its sides, settling in the flat area so you have to do "island" hopping to get out of the lava.
The new maps name could be "Childs play" (the floor is lava) Posted Image
Something like this...

PS: I just realised that the Overlord Dropship is quite a big "building". I would guess about 40 floors of a normal building?

MW4 and its expansions have the best maps I could remember from the franchise. Including the water filled one that takes place inside a dome; the Solaris one, the fortress map and the city ones.

Open maps in MW4 feel much more like the ones you might see in War Thunder. Later in this video you will see or remember what one urban map looks like.

We don't see brand new maps all that often as after a while you tend to cover a lot of the same options.
Put it this way.
The farmlands map looks really good. (See the link on the first page).
Essentially though we are looking at a wide open map with rolling hills, some gullies and a few obstructions.
It would not be massively different to Polar Highlands.
However, as we have seen with this new remake of Canyon Network as Hibernal Rift, you can re-skin a map to give it a vastly different visual appearance and then with a few tweaks here and there for the terrain and some additional features you can create some interesting variety without needing to create something from the ground up.

More alien or less hospitable landscape?
I would think that Tourmaline Desert as one map that I don't believe has changed at all should be up to get a new variation, The HPG grey moon tileset is one we have not had reused on other maps. How about a grey moon version of Tourmaline?

For a game, MWO has a lot of maps. They just don't feel like it due to the lack of map rotation because of map voting, a real bad idea. There is a reason why you don't see map voting in other games.

Remove map voting, you would reduce map fatigue although you won't eliminate it.

Another reason is maps specific to particular game modes which people don't end up playing. I don't believe that this is a rational use of creative and developer resources.

I would create QP version of the Solaris and Invasion maps in the same vein as Grim Plexus stems from Grim Portico. This can help salvage the investment on Solaris and Invasion maps by reusing textures and artifacts in them.

Also, more maps that don't look like Canada would be nice.

Why the Siege maps have not been added to the Quick Play rotation I don't know.
Just having them there would instantly increased the map pool and you would think they would work well with all of the other modes.
Siege as a mode may not work but the Counter Attack version could.

On a side note, we should definitely have the maps AND an option to use drop decks in Private Lobby.

Map voting definitely needs to go.

Hell, just having the Siege maps in QP would allow players an easy way to familiarize themselves with the map without having to go through FP's ridiculously long wait times.

Well, just been able to download the patch and wander about the new Hibernal Rift map.
There are obviously some similarities, a few landmarks, that you see link it back to the original Canyon Network design.
However:
  • There are now various ways to get out of the trenches.
  • New overhanging areas that create some raised platforms as well as 'tunnel' areas.
  • Changes to the heights of some of the outcroppings changing the amount of cover they provide.
  • And some new obstacles influencing areas of movement and providing cover that wasn't there before.
It looks more like a new map than a remake of an old one.
At this stage I haven't played on the map, but I would suspect that it will play quite differently.
This is all good in my opinion and I'll say it again, I am impressed.
If this is the sort of changes we could expect to be made to other maps, then please PGI, do more!!

Thought it worth raising this topic again.

There was no discussion on maps in the developer update so I am hoping we might be able to get some info on a few things:

1. Possibility of any brand new maps
2. Re-skin/modification of existing maps... along the lines of how Canyon Network was redone as the basis for Hibernal Rift.
3. Adding in any more of the classic maps... the original Terra Therma for example.
4. Using certain map biomes for the events in FP to give the planets a consistent theme.
5. Map voting.

Might make a poll....

there was no discussion of new maps in the dev update because they dont have any plans for new maps.

although crowdfunding a map pack of 3-4 maps and possibly a new gamemode might be a way for PGI to make some money. since new maps and gamemodes seems to be a form of content thats high in demand among the players of this game.

Crowd funding some maps as a pack included with camos, colours, c-bills, mc and so on? Might work.

However, it was because there were no questions asked about the maps during the discussion that I'm raising it now.
It didn't seem difficult to add the classic maps back in, can we get any of the others? Noteably: Terra Therma, I don't remember Caustic Valley being that different but that has been asked about as well.

The redo of Canyon Network as Hibernal Rift also seemed to be one of those 'low hanging fruit' and in my opinion is fun to have in the game and there are plenty of other maps that would be really interesting to see get the same do-over.

Brand new maps would always be nice, but perhaps that is no longer practical. Another Siege map might be a nice touch.

What about getting those Siege maps in quick play for regular skirmish, incursion or assault matches?

Just spotted this suggestion for a new map within a jumpship.
https://mwomercs.com...atana-jumpship/

Personally think it's a great concept and if we consider existing map options and do overs, basing this concept on a design like the Factory map from Solaris would seem a good starting point.
Multiple levels, multiple cargo bays, enclosed walkways, ramps, lifts etc.

A long narrow (less square) map design as a jumpship concept would be a nice addition to the maps for quick play and faction play.

I would hope that with the way Faction Play is going with the events focused on a particular planet/scenario that it might be themed accordingly.
It's an arctic world, so we only see the snow maps.
It's a volcanic world so we only see the volcanic maps.
That would work nicely for Faction Play in my opinion.

For quick play, got to vote and need the maps to appear for selection to vote on at the moment.
Whether the voting gets removed... well...
However, some of these events we have, particularly when it also involves a sale on colours and patterns would seem like an ideal time to also have a limited set of maps to fit the event. That would be a bit of fun and change it up a little.

Depends what can be done with the event system.

This game has more maps that most games I know. All it needs is remove map voting, plus find a way to include modified siege maps from FP into the regular QP queue.

you know what really would enrich the reskin-map-idea?

doing it with the vitric-forge tiles.
-they're not used in QP at all atm.
-makes for some very hot maps, instead of the boring cold ones we got right now.
-it'd totally change said maps.

example: canyon to hibernal does very little imo to change how you play that map (hint: vroom)
changing for examle alpine peaks to vitric temperatures.. oh boy^^

Agreed.
I do like the Hibernal Rift make over. In addition to the tile change there were several modifications to the terrain, like having that crashed dropship on the ramp, that provides a few differences.
The Nascar still happens, sure, but that's on us as players.

Totally agree that seeing a map like Alpine Peaks redone in something like the Vitric Forge tileset would be such a visual change I'd like to see it for that reason alone. I'd also love to see it done in the Terra Therma and Emerald Taiga tilesets for the same reason.
Add the changes for temperature, some visibility differences and some other terrain adjustments (like Hibernal) and that would be great to see.

What about some of the Siege maps redone to multiply those options?
Boreal Vault with the Viridian Bog tileset? That would be funky.
Grim Portico in the Vitric forge tileset?
Vitric Forge in the HPG tileset?

There are certainly plenty of combinations and as far as further development work in MWO is concerned, giving more maps the make over would be one of those 'low hanging fruits'.
