Are they only active with the variants original omnipods equipped or does it not matter?

Mouseover the omnipods and look for yourself which are bonuses attached to that omnipod and which are bonus of 8(all 8 omnipods from a single variant)

The quirks are the sum of the individuals pods. If one uses all eight of the stock pods you get an additional set of eight bonus which is fairly mild generally.

Most omnipods have a set bonus that is only active with all eight pods of that set, but some pods do have quirks that are active otherwise, I can't open mwo right now to look at how they're differentiated, but I don't recall it being hard to tell once you know there's a split

each OmniPod will can have Quirks(they appear Green)
below is the set of 8 Quirks(Gray if you dont have the Full Set)(Yellow if you have the Full set)

on the Mech Stats Tab, their is currently no way to tell between,
1) Base Quriks, Quirks built into a Mech to balance them,
2) Omni Set Bonuses, Quirks when you have a Full set of Omnipods(Only Omnimechs)
3) Skill Quriks, Quirks unlocked Via the Skill Tree,

PS) Targeting Computer Quirks, Quirks given by TCs(will not show on a Mechs Quirk List but do Count)

there actually is a way to tell, but only between specific pod and pod set quirks.

If you have a full set of same omnipods, when you hover over one to get the information, at the bottom of the tab that shows up, it will show:

8/8 Omnipod Set: 2.5% EXP, etc.

It will show up in gold if there's a full set, and dulled grey if it isn't a full set.
