Nasty one this...I'm going to get burned.
Assaults right...big, stompy, slow and at the back, sometimes wth LRM's.
Somtimes with a lot of LRM's.
1st) It's a game, so we should just play and have fun....
BUT
2) It's an assault with LRM's.
OKay...
In one game, I actually went behind a mech and basically screamed "Get out there, you have about 99% armour"
None of my team died from then on.
Yes, they are slow, and they don't always manage heat well, and let's face it, assaults suit older players.
They need directing...funnel them.
Your average assault is probably not the most rapid in reflexes.
But branding them or dipping them isn't going to help matters.
If worst comes to worst...form up behind them, not a cluster cushion, just behind them, like the next klick away.
That way...they have to be the font line.

I once had a very annoying player stand behind me and block my LRM Supernova's movement the whole match on Mining.
He kept demanding me to "share armor".
I didn't move more from 50 meters to either direction from my chosen spot. Not one step.
Still did 800+ damage, with 4 KMDDs and 2 solo kills. A good match by anyone's standards. I think we even won it, but I don't remember honestly..
Point is - don't let anyone tell you how to play your game. It is YOUR game. Not theirs.
While on the subject of "how to play Assaults", here are a few tips:
Firstly there are 3 types of Asaults - LRM Assault, Brawler Assault, and Sniper Assault.
1) How to play Brawler Assaults: Well, for this one, you need a bit of luck and teamwork. Assaults are slow, so you need to stay with your lance and team, and have them push with you. Let them use you as a meat shield, but don't overexpose or go too far if your team doesn't follow you. Let the LRM boats and snipers force the enemy into cover, or have a light distract them, so you can move unopposed. Then, when in range, smash them in the face and torso-twist, use up as much armor as possible to soak up enemy fire.
2) Sniper Assault: Get into a favorable position with lots of cover, and don't expose yourself too much. Snipe and force the enemy into cover. Once your team pushes, look for exposed damaged targets to take them down quicker. Once you're out of ammo, move up to soak up damage and meat shield. If you need to reposition, do so.
3) LRM Assaults: Find a position in deep cover, preferably about 600 meters from the enemy, and surrounded by teammates. Ignore early long-range locks, they only waste ammo. Use good solid locks to suppress the enemy, and punish their movement. Look for exposed, damaged targets to take them out quickly. Prioritize enemy assaults and pushers. Watch your team's movements, and try not to get left behind. If you are solo, there will always be an enemy light on your rear. If you see lots of AMS, especially on a single carrier, Alpha-strike it, and use that massive 50+ tube count to overwhelm it's AMS and take it out as quickly as possible. Don't go to the front lines. Yes, you are an assault, and have lots of armor. That means exactly nothing when you're getting focused by 2 or more mechs, and have nothing to fire back at them. They will take you down in seconds, because you are a large, slow target. A brawler can fire back and make the enemy torso-twist. A LRM boat cannot. Use your mech's strengths. When you find yourself without ammo, use all that unspent armor to push and create an opening for your team. Warn them about that, and coordinate with them. If somebody is NARC-ing for you, thank them. If you find yourself pushed by enemy lights, pop a UAV and ask for help.

Adding to Vellron2005, I recommend he Awesome 8Q for Heavy PPC. 30 damage when comboed. Can output 5 SPL for a basic AC20 output when you get closed in on.

Oh the irony.
I do get pretty butt hurt if I see a 90T assault boating absolutely nothing but LRMs, using everyone as a meat shield, especially if they're the last one alive...Or if there are like 2 or 3 of them. Like...If it's getting down to the wire, say, 6-8 or something...The least you can do is move up and make some presence. Your LRMs will still do damage beyond the min range.

Wow, what a thread (by OP who can't write like a normal person), LRM assaults telling people it's okay to be useless piece of scrap!
Why people dislike LRM assaults? Because you can make almost as good heavy LRM boat with a bit higher agility to react faster, with smaller engine for extra tonnage because the speed will still be close to that of assaults and enough to keep with the pack, and without extra armor (that you most likely ain't gonan share) which is not an issue for LRM boat.
600m boating is top stupid too, the best spot for LRM boat is right behind ally frontline where lurms can be delivered fast without giving enemy time to dive into cover or simply without risk of sending them into nowhere because you're too far to see where lurms land, being in the center of the pack also means you can provide support for flanking mechs and this way allies can also protect you from squirrels or other ****. Lurms travel over allies so you can (and should) provide close support/focus fire from behind allies as allies will be unable to block your fire, this is why lurms are still fine on solaris map.

this kind of thing is a double edged sword. while its true that a lerm assault in the back is pretty much just going to be fish food at some later point in the match. but a brawler assault taking point seldom gets support. so its easy to understand why people just tend to ignore their own assaults. but thats ok, a useful assault pilot stay alive by themselves, neither falling behind nor over extending, and contribute to killing the enemy.
people wonder why lights are op when so many assaults pretty much just kill themselves off.
