I agree, a single AMS will not make much difference against a hailstorm of LuRMs.

Did I miss a patch where it is possible to remove equipment from your lancemates and install AMS on their mech?
Half a team carrying AMS is the realm of premade teams, not PUG-Land.
even then:
- are you close enough for all of their AMS to protect you?
- can your team effectively push/maneuver/fight while sticking close?
Unless you get a organized team to Deathball into the enemy, peeking, using cover, sharing armor and relying on LRM equiped mechs poor trading ability is the way to win matches against a LRM heavy team. LRM heavy teams are usually short on Assault mechs to push/share armor at the frontline.
My opinion on how to win without relying on what your teamates brought to the fight:
1) Move with your team, but stick near cover.
2) Expose your mech to fire and have enemies waste LRMs when you pull out of sight.
3) Call targets while picking at enemy ranks, someone MIGHT pay attention.
4) Play well and your team will get well ahead on kill count. Then mop up those lazy enemy LuRM boats who did not share armor with their team.
This works unless:
- you have a lancemate go Leeroy Jenkins and die charging the enemy line in the first 3 minutes.
- or the enemy has a good pilot with ECM and NARC marking your teamates for death.
