I just played quickplay group drops for about three hours. Not sure where this huge clan laser alpha strike thing is a problem. I did however get killed quite a few times with dual heavy gauss and LRM/ATM spam. Lasers are almost obsolete.
Try using heavy lasers, YOU WILL BLOW **** UP, yourself that is..

Some generally reasonable ideas in the OP and replies.

Replacing cool shots with the coolant pod equipment altogether is closer to the ideal solution, but from PGI's perspective, linking a coolant pod equipment item to the cool shot consumable and associated skill tree would probably be the easiest way for them to implement such a change with minimal overhauling. Even in that case, though, changing their effectiveness to work proportionally to equipped heatsinks is also imo a great idea.

Also, the idea of restricting air and artillery strikes to light mechs is a great one. I voted "no" on removing consumables as a system entirely because it would be more balancing work for PGI which makes it less likely to be added; restricting support strikes to scout mechs and cool shots to coolant pods solves most of their associated problems with relatively little work from PGI's end. Let's be real, they don't want to completely remove consumables as a currency sink.

Wasn't TAG orginally for spotting for Artillery and the like and not for Missiles?

A little bit of both, according to Sarna. It's used for painting targets for guided artillery munitions like the Arrow IV Homing Missile, much like a modern laser designator paints targets for infrared guided bombs and missiles. Such tools would be really useful for siege and incursion, but kind of useless everywhere else, so I can see why PGI made it into an LRM designator for MWO. The presumably unguided munitions used in the air and artillery strike consumables can just be given grid coordinates over the radio. With the rangefinder and GPS equipped to every mech I don't see any technological reason why every mech wouldn't be able to just ping a location and have Betty transmit the information to allied fire support. I'd just like it to be limited to scout mechs because it fits their role and gives them more utility.
