I disagree, the grind is nothing. A tier 1 should know better.

Play more Faction Warfare. You can easily get 800,000 cbills a game.
Also, I'd argue that if you use them wisely, UAV's will be a net cbill gain for you.

Most of yesterday I was netting 350,000 per match, give or take 50,000. I started the day with 1 million C-Bills and ended with 20 million while blowing 2-3 consumables per match and I had some 'MechLab expenditures in there.
Grind seems fine to me.

Meanwhile you can go to profile and see your average c-bill per match instead of anecdotal match results.

Been using the loyalty hbr with +50% and using at most 1 coolshot to farm cbills for Solaris. Around 200k to 300k per match. Not bad.

Well, for me the average is:
Accumulative C-Bills Per Match 130,471.65
So as I am currently trying to save for a Shadow Cat and a new Engine for my Crab, I guess this is going to take a while. Buying a Marauder and kitting it out really wiped out my savings.
***EDIT: A quick addition: When you buy a 2018 Supporter Pack, as I did, you get 10% more exp for every match, 10% more money for every match and 250K additional CBills for any event you complete. Especially with short events like the current one, that helps a lot. And the Supporter Pack lasts for about half a year for 10 or so bucks. Really nice value.***

I can understand it if you want to keep it completely FTP, but whilst the sale is on, I highly recommend buying into the resistance II pack. Even at entry level you will get a strong Special variant mech with a 30% Cbill bonus, and higher packs also give premium time.

I also disagree with the OP. PGI gives you a ton of ways to make cash in this game. Don't ignore the events as they often give cash bonuses and the achievements can give a nice little boost as well. When you're just starting out the training simulation achievements give a nice little cash boost. Also, like most other folks said - don't use consumables when you are trying to grind out money.
