The only time there was "unknown fighting in the periphery, with a level of devastation heretofore unknown", that was the Clans before the IS knew they existed.
The recent mini-campaigns in Faction Warfare have been very popular. No doubt they'll be continuing in the same vein. Their recent podcast even implied that they were hoping to be able to do something other than the standard "tug of war", and even have conditionally progressive campaigns, where the results of one day's fighting affect the next day's missions, etc. Though I expect that level of immersion to be at least a year away, and possibly never, given the potential playerbase collapse after the release of MechWarrior 5...

on a serious note for once.
Did anyone else think that grainy img kinda looked like a mech with a big round melon like a crusader?
Or is that just wishful thinking on my part? :/

from Sarna
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Periphery
The Periphery refers to the region of space surrounding the Inner Sphere. The border between "the Periphery" and the "Inner Sphere" is generally 450 - 550 light years away from Terra. The Periphery is surrounded by the Deep Periphery, though the borders for this region of space are more nebulous. The Periphery is littered with small colonies and a handful of interstellar nations, legitimate or not.
