Hey PGI, how about throwing us a bone, via read-only access to the Beta Forum. I am getting tired of reading (and creating) inane threads in the General Forum. Things have really degenerated since 22,000 people fled the GD (General Discussion) for CBD (Closed Beta Discussion), now it is all about "Where is my <mech and/or bodypart>" threads, and "Take me seriously because I have zero credibility" threads, or "Is this game like <random game, unrelated game>", and my personal favorite the polls "Should this Poll have been a Poll or a Thread" poll.

Even if this were only extended to Founders Members (whose money you already have, and who have guaranteed (future) access to the Closed Beta), it may be enough incentive to encourage a few more Founders sales (lord knows reading GD everyday is really putting a damper on my enthusiasm).

At which point all journalists buy Veteran's founders accounts and, having not signed any NDA, post information about the game (likely negative aspects as that's mostly what people will be discussing at this early stage) and cause PGI all sorts of headaches that the NDA is specifically designed to stop.

Read-only access would still be a huge breach of the NDA, unless you want every read-only urer to have to sign and adhere to an additional NDA.

They have the NDA in place because the game simply isn't done yet, and leaks of 'omg this is so broken' (early bugs, incomplete mechanics, glitches) would be very bad press for the infant MWO. People in beta need to discuss what is or isn't broken, but that doesn't mean it is ready for mass consumption

What happens when it repeatedly gets broken? Sue the offending party and ban them from the game for life?

Obviously it doesn't make any sense to give everyone access to the beta forums and make then sign an NDA. Everyone knows but can't talk about it?

Put 10 people in a room with a 'secret'. Then let them go. 4 out of those 5 will blab. 2 out of those 4 will sell their views to some sort of media. The other 2 will sell a list of faults to the 'competition'.. The 5 not mentioned ARE the competition 'spying'.

To the OP

This has nothing to do with NDAs or anything else. You paid for the perk of getting into Closed Beta on Aug 7. It's getting close to that date and you're getting antsy and are slowly finding that those around you are being picked randomly to get in earlier. I fail to see why PGI should change their plans. I highly doubt that if you were in beta that you'd be over on the beta forums posting requests to the devs to let the "other people" see the forums in a read-only state.

Other than the agreement of the Aug 7 early entry, PGI is not obligated to show anyone any information prior to live release (heck, even when they let you in, theres no guarantee the version you get will be even close to the "dev only" version). I've played other games ::cough:: ::Final Fantasy XI:: ::cough:: which for 7 1/2 of the 8 years I played it, did not beta a single thing to anyone other than internal employees.

Just relax ... I know I get really antsy when games I love are being released soon ... jumping to any site, forum, or article I can find just to absorb more info.

Actually the OP did not buy a founder's pack. The rest of your comment is pretty apt, though. Don't get tunnel vision and burn all your interest on a game that's in closed beta!

Everyone would probably find all the beta testers and then begin spamming their profiles and mail systems with begging for in-game screens, the loadout restrictions, c-bill prices, most effective builds, how fast can these go, ect.

I believe everyone's covered the whole 'why the heck would they do that' aspect and the serious downsides to letting everyone in the forum go onto beta.

I don't understand. Journalist could buy buy a Founder Pack now and may already be in, and will definately be in Closed Beta on the 7th. According to Russ, the game will still be in closed Beta on August 7th and all founders will have to sign an NDA anyway (unless they release the NDA, which would make sense because it is unenforcable for minors).

As for letting the rest of us in, it would be extremely simple to add second login to the CB forum for non-beta testers that includes NDA language. Keeping it a secret wouldn't be anymore difficult than it is currently. You talk you get booted, bye-bye founders package (which is why they may only allow Founders members in).
