i would always go with full modular and atleast silver rated
evga and corsair would both be a good pick.

well seeing you have been so helpful... what does full modular mean? My PS is at the bottom of my case.. it has a huge open area down low, the rest of the comp is up top.

there are three ways of outfitting the cableing of a psu.

non-modular. all cables are fixed to the unit without cables being detachable
semi/half modular. the 24 pin atx cable /possibly more are fixed to the psu. has sockets for hdd/gfx extension cables
full modular. all output cables come separate from the psu

non mod would create a giant bundle in your case
semi can work for many cases
i like full b/c ease of install/upgrade/replacee

always make sure to not crossover cables from different manufacturers

have you tried booting without any card installed and the monitor on internal gfx ?
look into bios to disable internal gfx, reboot, install card, try to boot

Before you buy a new power supply, I would plug the newer video card back into your new computer and take a very close look at the area of the motherboard as well as your case near the card slot. You are looking for anything the the card might be touching / shorting out on.

just fyi, your new card requires at least 25% more output from you psu then your old card. Could very well be that your psu is faulty and can't handle the peak load upon start.

THIS!

My brother couldn't get his computer to boot after switching Graphics cards. Turns out he had switched his ATX cable at the same time so it matched the rest of the cables in the case. Same connectors, different pin-out on the PSU. Thankfully nothing fried.

He never mentioned it and it took me almost two hours to figure it out.

ah, ok i was kinda thinking that it could be detachable cables, but was unsure, i also thought it could mean it could be placed differently. as far as making sure they are the same cables, then i am amusing you mean modular so that would mean don't use corsair on a evga ect?

I will try removing the card and booting again now that the comp is running again..

i suppose that is possible too. I'm gonna try and talk to a local friend and see if he might have an extra PSU laying around that i could try if those extra steps don't work just to be sure it is not the MB.

I do wonder if i could test it with a volt meter though, unplug everything and do some checking but i would need to see the spec layout. My father fixed tv's/vcrs for years so he was always checking voltages and i'm sure he could do it.. he still has all his stuff any time i had electronics that broke he fixed um, but comps was never his thing, but i'm sure he could handle checking a PSU, I would hope Posted Image

Oh one last thing, those ratings.. Gold, bronze, ect.. the PSU i have says it is a gold, but what does that actually mean? i didn't see any silver though, maybe those companies just didn't have silver forsale atm. Dunno what the difference is..

though i guess i could go wander over to tom's hardware and do a bit more research on them if i eventually need to grab one.

Or it's just aged enough to get to that point. High operating temperatures and high loads speed up the process as well.

Yes, the pinouts for them are not standarized but they often use interchangeable plugs. Some people fried their PCs trying to just swap the PSU and leaving in the cables.

exactly. most connectors/plugs wont fit between brands. but if they do only bad things will come out of this.

you would need an atx 2.0+ psu

one would really have to know wtf he's doing when it comes to electrics. however you would have to "jump-start" the psu and put some load on it. those things dont like running dry

Wow that's a news flash and a pity. The 1050 is a superior card to the R7 360.

Fun fact: the 550-Ti idle power draw is a mere 15W. The R7 360? A whopping 83W.

z77-A asus board needs a bios update to work with the card? (not sure why it would, or why my old p5n-d was fine with out doing that)

Why not update your Bios

Version 0603 for the Z77-a says it improves compatibility with "some" PCIE devices
And later versions improve stability
Sometimes you have that kind of issues

The only other thing I can think of since your board complaint about an OC failing is setting the PCIE frequency manually at 100, where it should be, maybe something gets messed up if left on auto

I'd update first
Also would try another PCIE slot

I also wonder why most people always jump on the PSU train

I have never had PSU issues when posting/booting, PSU issues come when doing something with the machine, not when its basically idle
A underpowered PSU would let you run windows and when you actually putting a load (like gaming) on it the system just switches off, maybe a BSD

Should definatly pass posting

Also the 1050 has a lower draw

Yeah, and the 1050 idle draw is 5W
Not seeing how a type of card that could run on the power from PCIE could be pulling too much from the PSU compared to the less efficient card
Especially when it doesn't do anything

I already updated my bios to the newest 0805 i think. I doubled checked it on the website and what ever the number is, i have that one loaded.. I forgot that i already did that when i built the system but i double checked just in case they came out with another in the last few years which can happen sometimes

I'll check the settings that you mentioned, and give that other PCI-e slot a try, i thought perhaps it only worked if you had the first one filled and then that one was for the whole crossfire thing.

I will update the thread when i get some time to play around with it again.. perhaps this weekend..

*edit, i dug around in bios just now, and could not find any settings for my PCI-E slots.. I can tweak ram and CPU, and a ton of other crap, but nothing about that.. maybe it is hiding, but i scanned everything i could find. I'll have to do a search to see if there is a option for it.

Well, with all this trouble i bit the bullet and just picked up another new card anyway.. I was hoping this card would help me put off my new comp build till next summer. I grabbed an Asus GTX 1060 6GB, it was on sale for 270 so i'm just gonna put this on hold till that card comes.. I was reading about the new +25% tarrifs coming, and with as voitile as vid card pricing has been and the new RX series seams to be fairly similar in stats as the GTX with out the ray tracing.. I kinda doubt the RX that would be on par with the 1060 will be cheaper/better dollar wise at this point.. It's a gamble but the 1060-6GB is a very solid card that will last me 3-4 years easy. Basically this card was suppose to be a band-aid till next summer.. now i just have the first parts of my next build. This game, Mech 5, Battletech and No-man's sky are basically the most intense games i'll be running so i should be solid for a good while.

the R7 is now in my old machine with a fresh install and will be a dedicated vid editor/writing machine.

But i will be using all these tips for when that card comes.. so thanks again for everyone's help.

Besides the bios for the motherboard, was there updated firmware for the card?

https://www.nvidia.c...update-x64.html

To enable the latest DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 features, your graphics card may require a firmware update.

Without the update, systems that are connected to a DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 monitor could experience blank screens on boot until the OS loads, or could experience a hang on boot.

The NVIDIA Firmware Updater will detect whether the firmware update is needed, and if needed, will give the user the option to update it.

If you are currently experiencing a blank screen or hang on boot with a DP 1.3 or 1.4 monitor, please try one of the following workarounds in order to run the tool:

Boot using DVI or HDMI

Boot using a different monitor

Change boot mode from UEFI to Legacy; or Legacy to UEFI.

Boot using an alternate graphics source (secondary or integrated graphics card)

Once you have the tool downloaded, please run the tool and follow the on-screen instructions.

The latest NVIDIA graphics card drivers can be downloaded from: //www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

For 32-bit NVIDIA Graphics Firmware Update Tool for DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4, please download here.

Just skimmed thru the thread but have you tryed removing and reseating your ram sticks? Blow the slots clean aswell. If you been mucking about in there they can get knocked and have imperfect connections that will cause startup issues like you described. Just a thought cause this happened to me recently.

He got an AMD R7 360, not the Nvidia 1050GTX, he clarified on the previous page.

Also, reference vBIOS on a non-reference card, is that a good idea? Reference drivers ok, but vBIOS?

EDIT: Ok it was confirmed by tech sites that the update works for non-reference cards too.

personally I think the RTX cards will be either go 2080ti or go home
its doubtful that anything slower than a 2080 can handle all the new stuff, and price per performance will be definitely better on the 10xx cards

You may want to wait a bit with a vidcard middle segment purchase.

Scuttlebutt is that AMD is to release an updated RX580 at 12nm with some more GPU clusters.....approaching 1070 performance @ RX580 prices.
That will either force 1060s down in price if you would be happy with that performance level or you could get more performance at a similar price level with the updated AMD card.

Well, I still have no idea what happened, and why i could not get that r7 to boot. I also could not get my system to boot with on board vid only, nothing would show on the monitor.

I did get that 1060 today, removed the drivers, installed the card, and tried to boot and got the Overclock error again. I reset system defaults and it booted. (My only overclock was my motherboard "Turbo" setting, which only gave me a .1 boost so i just set the board to normal.

After a restart again, the system booted, was able to install the drivers, and i ran benchmarks and everything is working great now. (i think i will do a fresh install soon though but that is aside the point)

At any rate, i have no clue why i couldn't get the R7 to work on this system, but the 550 and 1060 run just fine.. and the r7 works just fine on my old system. I guess i will be scratching my head on this one for a while. The only thing i can think of is perhaps the Turbo on-board over clock was causing some sort of issue, and after being powered up and down a bunch of times with out being shut down properly cause some sort of issue that i was able to solve. The new 1060 is also in the same slot i was using before and i don't seam to have any power issues.

So Let me just say thank you to all the folks that tried to help me out, and now i'm back in action and according to my benchmarks i should be much better off. Posted Image

I have a few games that don't play nice with AMD, so i stuck with nivida.. I rolled the dice and i hope 270 was a decent price for what i got, and what my performance will be for the next few years.

first time i logged into MWO, i got some weird bluescreen error while in the mech lab.. restarted, then ran scandisk and tried again.

Game ran great for the match, FPS lowest dips hit 45, with averaging around 50 while moving.. that is up 20+ FPS on dips which before would hit about 25 during move active battles so i'm pretty happy!

*edit, seams like depending on the map i've seen FPS as high as 78! Most dips don't hit lover than 48. 48-55 seam to be about the average.

thank you again for all the help
