Well, it's a pod-design like the Marauder, they tend to have a small frontal profile. Also, it has huge arms eating even more mass, making the torso smaller thanks to volumetric scaling.
I'd say it was not entirely unreasonable hoping for good scale.

The quirks are decent but sufficient. Probaly going for
1N with ac 20, 2ml and 1 LL. LFE 280 with sufficient heatsinks
1n2 with uac 10 and 5 ML
1nB with PPC, 3 mls and gauss rifle
2N with mrm 30 and uac 5
3n with gauss rifle and 6 MLs.
INV with 2 LL and 4 streak srm 4s

It NEVER had JumpJets until the Clans got their hands on it and refitted the Loadout with their technology. Those various Factories of the Inner Sphere did NOT even incorporate JumpJets into the design originally. So that's why you're not seeing JumpJets in the MWO Edition.

There's also the fact that up until roughly Operation Bulldog, the Champion was actually a nearly extinct mech in the IS, apart from the ComGuard "ClanBuster" Variants from Tukayyid. They started being produced again around then.
Champion's basically an IS Ebon Jaguar. decently fast, decently agile, heavy firepower, low but wide profile.

Great 'little' mech and reasonably fast too, can really take a hit

Actually correcting this, Just played in an Assassin and that can take more direct fire than these new Champion mechs. Disappointed.
