Good thing most Champion variants have zero arm hardpoints, and only the Invictus hero has any dependency on them (Champ 3N can ignore the arms entirely). That means you WANT to lose arms instead of torsos.

Actually, I decided to go with a simple 6xMPL build for my 3N and it seems to work decently. With the range quirk and a targeting computer the range of the MPLs is 249m (and will go further when I get some skill nodes into it), so it's adequate with decent speed (I used a 330LFE to close quickly). It's not a good corner peeker but it's a decent hill humper. I decided to use the arms because I stripped the arms on my 1N, 1N(S), and 2N so figured it would be improper not to use them on the one mech that had them.

My 1N(S) was impressive in its first match though; 5 kills and 620 damage from a completely unskilled mech running an AC20 and 4 Medium Lasers. My 1N also had a nice first match (again, unskilled) with 3 kills and 471 damage running a Heavy Gauss and 4 medium lasers.

I would ignore the arm weapons on the CHP-3N but it's not a big issue either way.

Many of the fears I had about the geometry were exaggerated. The Champion's survivability is actually okish, and the STs don't get focussed as much as I fear (though still a lot).
As for its strengths, it is all I hoped for. The Champion has great mobility and the hardpoints provide excellent firepower.

The Champion is just a joy to pilot. If you not sure about purchasing, give it a try. (But keep in mind I am a fan of cavalry Mechs, and the Champion is one of them).

Okay, your statement seems to contradict itself.

The arms don't provide much defense and you say you lose side torsos quickly.
Then you say your arms blow off so quickly and that it's unacceptable for a heavy mech to lose it's arms so quickly.

Either the arms don't provide defense and make poor shields, or they do provide good defense and make good shields. Considering the Champion has no/few hard points in the arms, it's great that they make such good shields. The non-hero with weapons in the arms only lose two of it's six energy hard points. Just build without those energy hard points, use those arms as shields and go.

The arms do not have enough armor to be shields. The problem is magnified, and a lot, by their size. You understand? Their size makes them absorb lots of damage that would ordinarily miss the mech completely. So they need more armor to make up for the extra damage that would not normally hit the mech.
