No Sound

I have no sound at all, from portal intro to in game.
I have tried everything I can think of. Drivers are up to date, made sure it wasn't muted, reinstalled game.
Here is my log. Assume that "Error: Cannot initialize soundsystem" is the issue?

Change the number of channels in your sound manager.

But here is a solution... its sooo simple. The sys_spec_Sound.cfg shows you that the game has a "predilection" for 48k sound. There.. just go to the windows sound options, and change de quality of the sound to 24 bit, 48000 hz. Nothing to do with 2.0, 5.1 or 7.1... thats just fine.

I currently have a workaround though. I have a dirt cheap external soundcard i used as a USB aux adapter (broke my aux port on my old laptop) which means i have sound using earphones external speakers via the USB external soundcard.
I'm more inclined to think it the geforce graphics card which is causing the issue? I think i've read somewhere that others have noticed similar problems.

FMOD is a proprietary sound effects engine and authoring tool for video games and applications developed by Firelight Technologies, that play and mix sounds of diverse formats on many operating systems.
Try disabling FMOD and run the game without it and just use your Realtek speakers
This will eliminate the possabilty that FMOD is causing the problem.

I'm not overly surprised its not working on that device ...

Ummm that would definitely leave you with no sound, seeing as the game depends on it ?

I tried uninstalling the realtek drivers and using the default "High Definition Audio Device" to see if it is a realtek issue but still no luck.
I am unfamiliar with FMOD. How would I disable it to investigate if it is causing the issue?

From reading the logs, FMOD detects the realtek onboard sound correctly.
Then it select a 7.1 sound configuration and fails to start.
Are you using a 7.1 sound configuration ?
If not, you should go to the playback sound properties in windows and set the sound configuration you are using (stereo, 5.1 etc)

Turns out there is a wider issue with modern games and sonic studio (which I believe is automatically installed on many ASUS devices). I disregarded sonic studio at first as i had everything switched off so thought there could not be an issue. I have just uninstalled sonic studio 3 and sonic radar. I can confirm I now have sound on Cities Skylines, MWO and Battlefield 5 (all of which i had the same issue). Finally I have sound!!!!!!
Thanks everyones help, greatly appreciated.
