Tiers don't really matter any more. the problem is group size.
[edit] The "don't really matter" comment is not official policy. You are only supposed to play with people within two tiers of yourselves. I'm assuming he's tier 5 and you are tier 1.
Also, grouping removes the tier limitation. If you want to play with him, you will need to start a new account and sync drop.

He would be tier 5. Tried joining him and tried to get him to join me and it always failed to find a game. IT was about 80 minutes of trying, if we werent allowed to play due to the tier difference you would think it would stop you trying. I've noticed other comments about group games not working since posting

It has to be the time you're playing. I play every weekend with a group of 3 to 8. I would say we find games in about 3 minutes on average.
Saying this I am seeing more and more of the same people.Due to this groupq is started to be auto wins depending on who is on your team.
pst we play 5 to 9
I forget if it matters in groupq but make sure you have all servers selected.

Trouble is that when we all click "Ready", all we can do is stare at the amazing animated circle. If someone cancels, I guess everyone gets canceled and we have to ready ourselves and start all over again. I don't think the VOIP works 'cause I was talking like an eejit and nobody responded and we certainly can't type in the chat box. Is it really hard for the UI developer to realize this and spend half a day to make sure that the chat box gets overlayed on top of the loading screen? We definitely need to be able to communicate with each other during this colossal waste of time, don't you think? If I'm doing something wrong here, please feel free to ruthlessly point that out.

Sync dropping is when you have a group of people click launch in the normal Q at the same time.
When I have done it for Marik ran events you get a mix of players on each team with about 4 players getting into the same game. Atleast during weekday peak time. Other times would be different.

Correct, I found it fun for a few games.
Side note if you can get a larger group even 4 players you can do private matches. Some of the best games i have played were in private matches.

The chances of landing in the same game and in the same team aren't good.
If you do go ahead with it, be prepared to spend a lot of time playing solo (didn't get matched into the same game), sometimes playing against each other (same game different team) and waiting around in menus while the other player finishes their game.

^^^ Especially if most are running the same class of mechs, ie all heavies, etc.

I couldn't get a lobby, let alone a match. (Noone in my friends list was in a group.)
Sad Panda.

In MWO, getting to play with friends isn't a guarantee. THAT is the issue for me. I don't care about winning. Winning isn't why I have a hobby like video games. It's for fun. Fun is there to be had but it isn't exactly the fulfilling type of fun. Heck, even PUBG does match-making perfectly and we can team up with friends in an instant.
