I'm very new to MWO, and it seems to me skilling up a specific mech takes FOREVER. I'm wondering, can SP be moved from one mech to another? Skilling up even 4 mech seems like it would take more time than Im' willing to devote to this game so making sure I'm not missing something. Thanks!

No, not unless you have historical SP (HSP) from the old skill tree system (or HXP for historical mech xp). You can use GXP in place of mech XP though. XP or mech XP can only be used on one individual mech (used to be any mech variant, but that only mattered if you had duplicates of a variant). GXP or general XP can be used in place of XP anywhere. You earn a small amount of GXP proportional to XP in every match (maybe 5%)?

Skilling up mechs is supposed to take a while, honestly. There's not a lot of progression in this game beyond that. You can, if you have the cbills, buy and use any mech chassis you want. There's no mech tiers in that regard. Faction play--to do it well--does require a good amount of gear and playtime invested, but don't worry about that now.

I highly recommend that you look at the current events running this Christmas season which will hand out a lot of freebies! Check the homepage or the Annoucements section for more. There is a loot bag phase one happening now and will be a second one starting (and running concurrently) starting the 24th. There's also 2 free hero mechs offered if you log in and play one match (min 50 match score) on the 27th.

I'd also say that although skills are useful, experience with the game is a better asset. A good pilot can have success in an unskilled mech. It's still very useful for sure, but a little less as necessary as with the old skill tree which just made your mech so much better and faster.

Oh, and Premium time, either as a reward in the Stocking Stuffer event or a purchase will increase your cbill and xp earnings 50% each match while active.

One point to note is that for each mech you own your first win of the day earns you double XP, so what you'd want to do on a daily gaming session is to make sure you've won a match in each of your mechs to maximize the XP generated per day. I think the Double XP bonus resets every day at 5pm pacific time.

If you have three or four mechs don't just play one for your whole gaming session, play one until you win then switch to another, then switch to a third when you win with the second mech. While grinding through matches is a way to get a single mech skilled up as quickly as possible, making sure you've used up your daily double XP bonus for each of your mechs will maximize the amount of overall XP you earn.

And as mentioned above, the current stocking stuffer event will earn you loot bags that have various useful things in them like MC, GXP, c-bills, and premium time.

You can if you already have a mech with unused exp. I play my Nova mech so often, it has 1,600,000 xp points saved up. But to use that xp point in another different mech I need to convert my Nova XP (experience points) to GXP (general experience points) by spending MC (mech credits). You can get very little MC from mwo events or buying them with real money, but it would be a complete waste of money. You are always better spending MC on mechbays first, then hero mechs, and lastly on cosmetic items.

Best way to level a mech is leveling the mech is during double XP events that happen twice a year, or use premium time given to you for free from events or you buying it, and lastly you can do it like me, just play the game for fun and grind through it without any help.

A fair warning if you use a premium time, the time counter of expiration of the 50% boost will continue to count down regardless if you are logged in the game or not. So use it wisely.

This is the also the reason why there is no good reason to own all different variations of a mech chassis. I just pick "the best" mech out of all of them and master it and forget the rest. For example, I only mastered the flea-17 only and didn't bother owning the other fleas.

Oh since you are new, I suggest you look in my mwo profile for tips. I think it would help you immensely.

I actually agree with the "just play what you like and don't worry about the rest". Getting exp in the game depends entirely on your performance in the matches. And for new pilots, especially on Light Mechs, it is often very hard to get the Mech skilled.

We had a discussion about it a while ago and the consensus among the really competetive crowd is that it can take about 80-120 matches for an average player to finish a Mech, If you are experienced, it going quicker, but can still be a painful process.

Which is why the Premium Time you get out of the current event is so useful. It doubles your experience per match while it is active and stacks with the double exp you get from your first victory of the day. So turn it on, cycle through all the Mechs you want to level until you get the first victory of the day and then just play for fun. You will need to learn the strength and weaknesses of your Mech, anyway, so just play. This isn't Pokemon, where you need to catch them all. ;)

Yep it take a while. Spent my historic xp and now relying on match xp. Bough a lot of mecha in the past few month and the grinding is palpable.

Sometimes skill are making a big difference sometime not, it depend of the battlemech. Some battlemech are better than others and grinding is easier. Others need to be skilled to perform it seems. Use your double xp match each day wisely !

Just a note: If you see an old post referring to needing 3 of a variant to level it up, that is no longer true with the skill tree. It used to be you could only unlock so many skills (the basics) before unlocking the next tier (the elite skills) until you had unlocked the basics on 3 different variants of a chassis. It was simply a grind and a way to prod people to buy premium time to speed things up. With the current skill tree, that system went away and the player experience improved (some hate the new tree but I think it's a much better system than what we had before. I personally think they're just whining because it effectively nerfed their mechs because the old tree made your mech more powerful once you had unlocked the elite skills. The current system is less of an absolute progression which makes it a little more fair).

You can, it costs a little bit of money, you "eat up" the skill experience of one mech (that you have more points on) and then you can use it on any mech.

Sometimes its just easier to level the mech up.
What mech? What loadout? Might have a way for you to level up quicker.
