We're clan right now and IMO the mechs and dropdecks are a bit more powerful than the IS equivalents, the balance advantage is definitely on our side. Not by much but still.

However, clan mechs do lack personality. It's definitely more fun to play IS.

Not really, player behavior is guided/dictated by game design. People are smart, they WILL take the path of least resistance to winning.

A lot of truth to this, but I think most players just clone builds rather than develop any deeper understanding of game mechanics. Then there is player perception... A person who looks for positioning first as a way of inflicting or preventing damage is likely to favor a faster 'Mech with more range and prefer Clan. A player who favors staying with the group and sharing armor may prefer slower but more heavily armored IS 'Mechs.

Add in the probability that large numbers of the general community probably blindly follow a few voices in the balance debate(ever watch a .7 w/l 170 avg ms streamer complain how bad the "team" is?) and it is likely that perception is pretty far askew of where the math actually is.

The only times when clans seem to "win" is at the start of the EU cycle, when 420 starts queuing, then when IS units wake up, clans get steamrolled.

Confirmation bias, I'll show you an entire log of clam wins.

Clanners.

Your dakkas are good, your lazors are still awesome and your lurms are ridiculous small and lightweighted you can easily take LRM 40 as BACKUP weapon with you.

If i were Clanner i'd take a good combination from speed and firepower, which are the main big points of clanners.

Taking Lurms exclusively is like driving a Ferrari with Diesel 2.0 Liter Engine.

You have so wonderful mechs: MadCat (Lazor&Dakka), Marauder 2c (!), awesome mediums and Piranhas! Plus all time classics like Timberwolf.

I guess the problem atm is that there is a huge mistake which can be made as Clanner: You really have to decide for a direction, push or poke or Lurm. Because the Clanmechs are so specialized you have to make a plan before the match for all 12 dudes. And thats the point where Clanners loose atm.

And good pilots are disabling themselves by taking Lurms because too much potential is wasted.

Most mechs are great on clan side untill you go up vs someone who knows the geometry and where to shoot.

Madcat B, 2 alpha's on each arm and its done. Marauder, shoot the balistics torso and they only have 2 back-up lasers.

Timberwolf.....loooool

Hellbringer->Left torso, thats where the 10% energy heat quirk is and most of its lasers.

Ebon-shoot it in the face it cant twist to hide.

the innersphere mechs are usually just shoot it in the face.

Catapult-shoot the missle boxes

Assassins-shoot it in the belly-button, its either CT or legs.

Marauders-ballistic shoulder off

Battlemaster/black knight/cata/grasshopper/warhammer, they will stare to hit you, shoot them in the CT.

That's an interesting comment.
Would you attribute that the the majority of clan mechs being Omnimechs and therefore there is not a compelling reason to take one variant over another?
Or would you say it's more about the quirks providing some sort of 'personality'?
Or is it due to the different equipment options?

Personally I have recently started using more IS mechs and have been enjoying them. Maybe it's just that a change is good, or that there is also that sense of using the 'original' mechs from the first boxed set. Haven't quite put my finger on it.

It's the weapons. Clams are 90% laser vomit and dakka with the occasional Gauss, PPC, or srm build. Unless you lurm or atm. IS haz heavy gauss, quad LBX10, MRMs, RACs, 3 different PPCs, and you still get laser vomit and dakka… unless you lurm… just more options and flavors.

I know our group does not play alot of clans because we beat the **** out of everyone when we do. IS is much more challenging and I can without a doubt say I am a better clan pilot than IS pilot.

IMHO dropdeck planning before dropping does half of the work. If your team has synergistic builds you'll stomp the opponent. Pug wars are horrible mash up of lurms, lazors and whatever. It never works out. PGI should encourage dropdeck planning somehow but yeah, PGI, FP, MWO, whatever.

Reading some of these posts makes me wonder if we are playing the same game. Specially for clanners who think they need more buffs.

Playing conquest mode against clanners going 90KM/h and packing the equivalent of an Atlas in firepower, or forever loop siege mode with clanners ALWAYS defending is interesting to see a consistent pattern to say the least.

I think both sides are pretty darn equal, but with that being said... when was the last time clan tech got a buff? Has this ever happened?

Yes, now that you mention it not long ago they reduced ghost heat from lasers, it was for both sides but since clan could boat more and bigger ones for the same tonnage, (and carry more double heat sinks to boot) this has basically enabled repeated of bigger alpha strikes for less heat on clan side proportionally than IS ones (the 80 damage hunch IIC driller comes to mind). Haven't played clan for a long time to test if this is still in effect but this has caused quite a stir in the forums. Where have you been?

Also, since they introduced the Piranha I think its time to make machine guns a true ballistic weapon and not a light speed rail gun repeater. This was not an issue before it was possible to carry 12 of them (before that nobody bothered carrying them). A bit sick of casual pilots going rambo for quick kills (possible PGI populist strategy to sell to a more broad FPS audience, at the cost of the franchise loyalist or course).

It seems like a lot of people can't agree that both sides have advantages the other doesn't have in a general sense. Like IS mechs tend to be tankier and clan mechs tend to be squishy.
Pretty easy to start there right?

Weapons? Everyone likes to bring up clan lasers. OP pls nerf... Yada yada. They have their trade-offs in comparison to IS weapons just like the mechs guys. More damage but hotter and MUCH longer burn duration in addition to usually having a lower ghost heat threshold when talking about boating numbers. Range quirks on IS laser boats actually have them exceed clammer capabilities in something cases.

Dakka? Honestly this is pretty even looking unless we're talking about the sheer power of heavy Gauss to any component but nothing to do about that unless PGI plans on introducing a similar or rival clan weapon, cough HAGs, but I would like to see less jamming from Ultras in general, especially clan Ultras with their greater jam chance.

F#@& you lurmerz ;)

Um...that same patch where they dropped the heat.... they dropped the laser damage of clan lasers as well. And they nerfed machine gun crits because of the "OP" Piranha a long while back…. where have you been good sir?

Wait? Are you referring to them raising the limit on clan micro laser GH as a buff to clans? Well I guess you got me there! Fear my 10 micro pulse!

I play FP daily. For the past month I switched Clan or IS depending on where I could most easily get a match.

For most of the last few weeks - when there were any FP teams at all - there were more Clan teams than IS.

(Incidentally, my unit went Clan for a month just last night.)

agreed. also, its more a case of people going where the population is most favorable to get a FW drop "within reasonable time" and i know allot of groups that will organize an opposing team as much as they do there own group...just to have people to drop against. my friends major major and level are famous for this, working to get some one building a team to fight as they build there own team. i personally fill ive played to much clan and we are doing a long term IS not because clan are not good" we play equal amounts both on the norm" but because to many people we play with flocked to clan all around the same time. and dropping against good groups you know are on the other team can be a pain when it happens over and over and the same people. allot of people will go where the winning is, and switch to the side with the least capable groups droping at the time.

Was it a streak dog or splat dog!? I bet It was a laser vomit dog!? Again though... you have to be within 150 meters for that to happen. The Flea with 7 small pulse is just as deadly, or the 6 second Jenner back in the day. Just because a light can kill a mech in 3 alphas doesn't mean it or the weapons are OP.

That was my first guess, but I didn't want to assume his gender.
