I though it would be a smaller version of a direct fire sniper like the Marauder. Guess again.
Should have got the Grasshopper or Zeus. What a bummer.

Already have the Resistance Mauler, so getting that Mauler really gives me nothing.
No interest in the clan mechs as I can't use them in Community Warfare.
Although the Orion IIC and Jenner IIC were tempting.

Grasshopper I would recommend. Even though it's almost strictly a Draconis Combine mech. It's pretty nimble. Think of a more agile Black Knight. Most people are pleasantly surprised with the Zeus. There's a couple fun things you can build on the Mauler, but honestly I consider that Mauler variant more of an oddity than the an actual okay Mauler.

Did you try AC2 and RAC2 combo? Here is a hint, use a MG to take up one of the lower slots. It doesn’t rearrange your weapons like the Sleipnir does (and the reason why I don’t bother with it). Got 14 skill points unlocked in one game.
Never going to replace the meta, but still kinda fun.

Hunchback IIC. It received a HSL quirk therapy recently and was pretty strong glass cannon even before.
For anything cheaper than that, you'd better buy Kodiak, sell it for the slot and buy an actual c-bill variant of the mech you want. This way you well get the mech and save some extra c-bills.
On-topic: Got a Warhammer (bc I own Grasshopper, Hellbringer and Roughneck already). It is exactly what I expected it to be: classic lasvomit, no better than I can run on my Grasshopper or Top Dog. Leveled it by doing the res of the event, it works. I'm now able field a full long range heavy drop deck for FP if needed. I'd rather prefer to have Ebon Jag champion or Dragon one, yet I'm satisfied, can't say a single bad thing about the mech I got.

I consider it to be the worst wacker, honestly. It is hardpoint starved and unable to strip arms for the most builds. In essence it is just a worse P1.

That and many of the old champion mechs arent really good these days with the sheer changes to how the game is played. So yeah, im happy i just went with the most expensive mech (and one that has weapons on it i can actually use on other mechs and not just sell too) just to get rid of it down the line when i need a slot. Its sad how far the kodiak (and many others) has fallen in terms of viability and the fact that the one truly scary kdk-3 build has been replaced by the MCII and blood arss, but it is what it is and we may as well just to what is viable today.

6xAC2 on the Mauler is a blast, though. Just takes some practice.

For those of you wondering what my dakka Mauler is, well, I tried a bunch of different ones.... stock 4 UAC5, didn't like it. 6 AC2, meh. 2 AC2 and 3 RAC2, ugh! The problem is that it needs so much face time and I can barely dish out reasonable damage. To give an e.g., I started firing on a Kodiak while he wasn't looking. I had 3 RAC2 and 2 AC2 on full throttle for about 3 seconds. He turned, fired something and I was nearly cored in the centre. That's basically what's happening with the dakka builds.
I then switched the loadout to include 2 LRM 15, Tag and 4 AC2. It was so underwhelming. And I died in all the matches that I've played. It seems like having range has done nothing for the survivability since just a couple of shots removes almost all of my maxed out FCT and both FST armour.
Again, try this:

Umm yeah there is no such thing as a bad bushwhacker . I scored that from a previous event . I found it no better or worse than my other bushies .
