It's used with my Shadow Hawks, Warhammers, Roughnecks.
XL170 for urbie, the upgrade for XL180 isn't worth it unless you need space for DHS. Also XL145 for heavy ballistic Urbies.

As for types for general purpose usage I would only by Clan XL and IS LFE engines for the most part with the one exception being the 300 which I do occasionally find good usages for the standard version of that engine size.
Oh yeah, for IS lights and some IS mediums, IS XL engines make sense.

LFE 250, 280, 300, 325, 350.
All of the above are engines you will find useful in lots of builds. Ratings below 250 are only of limited use in 'Mechs with sub-250 caps (or for troll builds), and any rating between the ones listed above are likely to only be of use in a handful of builds as well. Those are good starting points for builds, because they're either at the heat sink breakpoints, or one rating up where the next rating is the same tonnage as the breakpoint engine. You could probably also throw in the 200 and 225 ratings, and 170/180 for the 20-tonners... but at that point, you're spending less than 2m cbills on the engine anyway. You'll want to prioritize the ones that cost the most, to maximize your savings.
STD... don't bother, they're already cheap. Spend the cbills on the expensive engines while they're cheaper.

This is true but I am assuming he wants to know which engines are the best when you want to stock up but don't know which engines you might need. I mean I honestly have at least 50 mechs running a size 300 and maybe 30 more running a 325 and probably at least a couple dozen with 280s in them. Point is, there are some engine sizes that are very, very commonly used or function very well as a starting point upon which to base your build around.

XL: 225, 255, 265, 280, 300, 325, 350, and get at least one 375

LFE280 and 300 being used most often imo.
when you buy a couple of mechs, you get many standard and/or xl-engines anyway; LFEs are rather uncommon on the lore-builds (aka the mechs you buy) we got atm, so go for them if you wanna stockpile.
in the end however, if you need a specific engine -now-, just go for that one. a running mech you like, build the way you like, is more worth than 2-3 mechs in the dustbin

I need an LFE375 and blew away a ton of c-bills on recent mech sales that needed a lot of engine upgrades.
Good thing I waited with this one.
Maybe get XL400 for some LOL builds...
