is it by design that an AMS can go through walls and ceilings?

or PGI is doing something to fix this?

one could argue that it is not by design choice but rather by limitation in computing power needed.
for any missile launched the server would have to calculate whether the AMS mech can see the missile or not

Well, since they draw a line to it to make the bullet visible, they could do that twice. The first time they draw an invisible line to it and check for object interceptions. If nothing intercepts the path, then draw the bullet and destroy a missile. That shouldn't be that much extra computing power. A bit more, but not a bunch.
