This is the first mechwarrior game I've been into since Mechassault, but most of the stickies only contain information regarding new gameplay/beta features and not actual guides on how to play the game. Sorry if I didn't read through them thoroughly enough, but I really couldn't find anything of use to actually learning how to play and guides in regards how Mech building/customizing works.
Thanks / my apologies in advance if I was ignorant.

Where can I actually learn how to play?

The videos are your best bet for seeing what's in game. There is one on the mechlab as well.

Mechwarrior 3 isn't stable on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC, but for some unfathomable reason, the Pirate Moon expansion is. If you can track down a copy, the commands can be remapped & mechs designed to give you some semi-relevant practice.

As stated above, we will be finding out how to play pretty soon. On the upside, when the game is actually released you will be able to give other people tips that were not availible to you.
You know, if you like doing that... or you can mock them mercilessly. ; P
