Baradul reminded me in his webstream about a week ago about a suggestion that was made a few years back. the suggestion was to have someone play as the drop commander.

During the stream he mentioned that he would rather have people concentrate on the match rather than try and do two jobs at the same time. But he also mentioned the 13th warrior and how he didn't think that people would like to play this role.

Actually I think people would if just for a break from piloting. Especially if MM has been handing you one of its epic bad streaks where every match is 12-0 or 12-1. Instead of logging off imagine if you could call targets, manage strikes and UAVs, and suggest movements.

It would fill the comms and help teamwork. It might also help people find their calling, not as a pilot but as a mech commander.

Could have its own skill tree and not ptw commander cockpit decorations. Could even create another revenue stream and new events.

And yes, will definitely take credit for the idea so many years ago. Thanks for the inadvertent shout out. Feel free to drudge out some of the other ideas from back in the day. Couldn't hurt to try them.

Would this 13th player be able to commandeer AFK/disco mechs (until the original user returned?)?

Or honestly how about living active mechs too*. I think we've all had many moments spectating a teammate doing really...questionable things and wanting to take the wheel from them.

*Just joking about this part...mostly. Kinda.

Up until that part, I thought you were talking about having some sort of agreement and something similar to taking Lance Command. But no. Anyway, people who want to play as the shouty one... errr... I mean, 13th Warrior, they have to have their own PSR system or something to, you know, track how successful they've been and what not? 'Cause we don't want a 13th Warrior who just says things and doesn't want any accountability. This isn't politics.

Been a few ideas in the past about having this sort of function.

July 21st 2016 from FireBean
https://mwomercs.com...-the-commander/

January 10th 2016 from Mr Inconsistent
https://mwomercs.com...ttle-commander/

I did one back on 17th June 2015
https://mwomercs.com...nd-perspective/

Overall it would be an interesting addition to the game giving a player a dedicated strategic role and various functions to go along with that. It is probably safe to say that at this stage in the game's life, adding in a commander role with enough functionality attached to it would be a massive undertaking and require some pretty serious changes.
Probably something that would have needed to have been in place right at the start.

Will I be able to mute them and their commands? If they're just going to be an over-glorified QP drop caller I'd rather not have them truthfully.

Agreed. In solo qp, I imagine all the so very stoned, drunk, and/or mostly just bad "13th Warriors" I'll have to listen to without even getting until they die early and start spectating before they start telling me how to play. Now, they can just start right in sucking all joy out of my game without bothering to know how to play the ******* game at all.

Maybe group qp and faction, which really need something to get people interested again, this might be a great idea. I know smaller groups of "casuals" in group qp always complain about the 12-man teams that dominate; maybe the overall coordination afforded by a designated drop-caller might be just the thing to bring those smaller groups back. I don't play in either group or faction, so someone with more invested in those aspects of MWO would have to speak for that.

But in solo queue? We're gonna need to shut that off.

Even among hardcore competitive players there are only a select few who can be good drop commanders. What makes you think I or anyone else wants to listen to the average joederp telling me what to do in game?

13th warrior...you mean someone to hope into the Command Console on a mech to give it some usefullness?
Wouldn't mind the idea if the commander gets some interesting gameplay with it other then just looking at a map. For example coordinating the strikes, mark enemys, not just voiping but a visual marking too.

I also wouldn't make them a spectator but, as said, put them into a mech so the team has someone to protect if they want some of the advantages that the Command Console + Commander brings.
The mech with the Command Console + Commander would also need some visual que for the enemy team so headhunting and protecting could become a part of the gameplay.

No, bad idea is bad idea.

The only place this would work is in a 13 man premade. But I hardly think its necessary in that situation. This aint supcom with thousands of units on a massive battlefield.

I already stopped listening to the drop callers we already have. Seems like when they call for a push they themselves stay safe behind cover. They don't want team effort they just want someone else to draw enemy fire while they make all the kills.

Totally thought this was about the movie 13th warrior with Antonio Banderas. Very disappointed in this thread.

Thats how the game shouldve been. They shouldve had a 13th player with a mechcommander-like RTS interface for seeing the battlefield topdown and ordering their team around. Also they could deploy tactical assets like strikes, UAVs, etc... as well as control NPC units and buildings. And they should have the option to jump in their own mech and deploy to the field if needed.

And yeah naming the thread 13th warrior and not having anything to do with the movie was BS.

This is an incredibly bad idea. Spectacularly so. In quick play no drop calling is even necessary or makes sense. Heck even part of its charm is the ad hoc nature. You want organised calls and instruction? Join a unit and play comp or cw.

its only a bad idea if the commander cant hop in their own mech which they absolutely should be able to do.

The player base and it's skill level is so low and players so ignorant now of top level players making calls, telling them where to go/shoot...

What makes you think implementing something like this would work? When they are going to do whatever they want anyway.

Never going to happen and thankfully, nor should it. I don't want some donkey who has no idea what he's talking about trying to direct traffic into certain death. Most calls I hear in-game are straight up garbage now, something like this would make it even worse.
