Going by my experience of piloting the Nightstar 9S, the arm convergence is kind of bad in some cases. So, the Champion seems to have the same problem but there are some variants with torso hardpoints. I'm not really sure which variant is good though. Is it worth making it a RAC 2 build with the torso Ballistic hardpoints or 1NB (like the Bushwhacker X1) or go for the Laser variant?

Edit:- Few more questions.

I don't have Clan assaults, so the current Drop Ship sale has good options for me. I'm considering going for the hero variants of Ebon Jag, Supernova, Warhawk and Dire Wolf.

Would you consider going for Mad Kat dakka build on the Dire Wolf backed up with some LL in the hands? I know the mobility is bad on it but would it be a decent substitute?

As for Warhawk, is the Hero worth it or is the ERPPC quirks on the C variant just too good to ignore? I mean, I get it. Faster travel time on the weapon = Fantastic but is it something to worry about a lot?

The Boiler with dual UAC20s and SRMs as a pure brawler is what I was looking at. Is the Scorch better at this?

convergence is pretty much a non-issue on this mech, except for the hero variant. the rest have all or most of their hardpoints in the torsos, where the weapons are clustered together tightly.

i've tried a few builds, but so far i've had the most success with my 1N2 which has heavy gauss + 5x ERML. this is probably the variant i would recommend if you only intend to get one, though you can't really go wrong with any of them besides maybe the hero.

as for RAC2s, i'm not so sure. the velocity quirk and weapon mounts are nice, but the CT feels a bit too fragile for the amount of facetime required. still had some good games with it, but i think the build is better on the dragon or bushwacker.

If you might buy the standard pack then I'd suggest the CHP-1N2; you can run things like AC20+5ML, Heavy Gauss+5ML, I'm having a good time currently running LB20X+5ML, or you can go for missile main weapons with MRM40,50,or 60 or LRMs with decent laser backup. It will give you the feel of the other Champions in the standard pack (part of the good feel of the Champion is thanks to its agility which carries across all variants) to let you decide whether you want to shell out the $20 for the base pack.

If you have no intention of getting the base pack then just go for whatever version has the hardpoints you like. I like my CHP-1N 2xLB10X build, my CHP-2N I think has LRMs with ML and MG backup but can be converted to triple RAC2s, and my CHP-3N has a solid AC20+6ML build I like. I found a lot of my Marauder builds could be moved over to the Champion with few sacrifices.

The Champion excels at hit and fade, big ballistic and (ER)Medium Lasers are the way to go, in this regard the 1N2 is the best variant as it has the 15% Ballistic Cooldown quirk:

My two favourites:

LBX-20
UAC-20

You can always switch the rockets for an extra laser if you desire. Personally I prefer having those rockets on hand.

The Champion and Bushwhacker chassis are on discount right now and I'm considering buying one variant of each at least. But I was also wondering if triple RAC 2 would be better on the Champion. I get that RACs are generally not very ideal and other ACs would be better but if you were to build a triple RAC 2, would you go with the Bushwhacker and try quick burst damage on the Champion or vice versa? Suppose if I were to get 1N2 and 1NB, then would the triple RAC2 still make sense on the 1NB and going with what's suggested for 1N2?

Edit:- I edited the OP to include some more questions if you guys don't mind Posted Image

Bushie for RACs, they require more facetime and the Bushie can tank.

I see. So, the Bushwhacker X1 for Triple RAC2s and Champion 1N2 for flanking and hit-'n-run tactics. Cool.

Edit:-

So far, my shopping list includes the following

Bushwhacker X1 for Triple RAC 2s

Champion 1N2 for burst damage flanking tactics

Veagle A for mini-Orion IIC A loadout

Veagle 3 for triple ERPPC loadout

*Following list waiting for recommendation or a change of loadout*

Dire Wolf UV for Mad Kat dakka loadout with some ERLLs (unsure how this will pan out)

Supernova Boiler for dual UAC20 and SRMs

Ebon Jaguar EC

Warhawk Nanuq for quad ERPPC

the only reason to get the ultraviolet is for the ability to do 8 AC2s. it wouldn't be my first recommendation for a new player, but it's definitely the strongest hero mech of the bunch and costs a lot of MC otherwise, so i'd say it's still worth picking up. one small annoyance though is that you have to run the build on a dire wolf A or prime for their extra CT armor if you want to optimize it as much as possible.

the warhawk prime is the one you want for the ERPPC build. the nanuq's main thing is its -20% UAC jam chance quirk, so you'd want to build it around that. again, this is probably one of the more worthwhile hero mechs out of that selection, so it wouldn't be a terrible choice.

the boiler can put out an incredible amount of damage very quickly. the scorch is a little easier to play, but the boiler is an absolute monster if you can work with the low mounts. i'd grab it for sure.

the only other particularly noteworthy hero mech available in this sale would be the revenant, which allows you to do laser vomit or 8x MPL, while swapping out the side torso pods for the MDD-C's, which get a whopping +25 armor.

As much as people loathe the 'mech, I run Quad ERPPC on a Night-Gyr... You gain ECM, Laser heatsinks and Jumpjets at the expense of ROF, agility and armour.

More sniping and less in-your-face is advised.

I have the Revenant already. It's the first mech that I ever piloted. It came with the Solaris Pack that I bought while I was installing MWO just a few months ago for the first time ever. I've kept it as a LRM launcher predominantly but I love the mobility of it and use the lasers a lot on it.

So, that Drop Ship sale is actually worth it then. If I buy the UV and swap some things around, I can do a lot of things like tiny but continuous dakka damage or Mad Kat dakka loadout a little bit or even go big with dual UAC10s + UAC 20 + AC20 and do 100 damage double-tap alpha. I considered the Timber Wolf but I don't like the lack of slots and I already have the Hellbringer, Revenant, Orion IIC A, Jade Kite and Vanguard. So, Ebon Jag would be a better choice, I felt.

At least you managed to get all the good stuff. With a sick daughter and getting a water leak repaired eating up my day off and evenings, I only just had time to get the paint event in a couple of hours last night, and completely forgot to take advantage of the sale to get a champion. I really wanted a champion 1N2 too :( oh well, I still have half a dozen mechs to level up anyway, but... oh well.

I'm sorry about your daughter. Hang in there, man. You'll get a second bite at the apple soon hopefully.
