I sometimes get that message when there is a connection issue on my end. I just exit the game, restart my router and everything works fine afterwards.

The servers aren't undergoing maintenance. That's actually a generic error message that comes up in the event of a whole host of different connection problems. Contacting support who will walk you through several steps to clear it up.
Potential Firewall issue - the port at the time of log-in attempt for the authentication server is being blocked.
Router issue - reset/restarting router
And some interesting info in this thread.

Order of steps to take to fix this issue:
1) Hit Start, open or type in the Run prompt the following:
CMD
type
ipconfig /flushdns
hit enter, then retry
2) Try changing your DNS provider following this guide:
https://developers.g...-dns/docs/using
3) If neither works, open a support ticket or post to the forums here with the following info:
a) who your ISP is
approximate location (if you are comfortable sharing it)
c) the results of opening the command prompt and issuing this command: nslookup patcher.mwomercs.com
d) the results of tracert patcher.mwomercs.com
