I can wait another two months to play the full release just fine. The epic store conspiracy theory is a leap and a half. Cool your jump-to-conclusion jets.

An alternative perspective:

1. We'e dealing with PGI here. It will be buggy no matter how long they put off the release.
2. The sooner it's released, the sooner the community modders can start improving it.

I got 50 bucks on Reddit that they don't come out with nothing more than a mod Discord channel instead of mod tools like they promised in the first year. I also bet that there will be modding on MWO before MW5 as they will be making more money from MW5 at that point to open it up to modding.

I’ve been listening to the first AMA today to hear what Russ is saying about the MWO move to Epic.

First of all, I want to mention that the timing of the AM was a bad decision, because it after the announcement.
Had they done the AMA a few days before the Epic announcement, it would be an information session instead of the explanation/excuse/defending session of today.
This probably could have reduced the refunds by 25% or more.

For myself, I already use 6+ launchers (including Epic, Steam and MWO, BattleNet, Ubiusoft, Origin, Bethesta and other single-game-launchers such as GW2) but Steam would be preferred for having my friends available for chat and teamplay invites.
My biggest pain point is that on the last AMA Russ mentioned that they will not consider Epic only and will even release on GoG on top of Steam.
As a die-hard Mechwarrior fan, I will probably keep my game, but I’m really at the fence and I don’t want to lose MWO nor MW5.

Now lets talk about the AMA topics
  • Discoverability in Epic vs Steam and Marketing
Russ:
its easier to see the game on Epic launcher than on Steam with the amount of games visible and this means the game will sell more often there.

Me:
Sure having only 5 other games on Epic vs 250 new games per week on steam is a big difference.
BUT on the other hand, Epic store is not running on everyones PC 24/7 as Steam does (I guess). And the user numbers are totally different.
IF MWO in steam has too low numbers, it might be because MWO itself had mostly the existing playerbase using the MWO portal because they were here from the very beginning.
Also without marketing (e.g. big front page on summer sale, advertisements) your game will never be seen on Steam.

  • Shifting Release Date
Russ:
releases of other big games might reduce visibility and also increasing dev time by few months increase quality, so the release was pushed a bit together with the Epic deal.
It will also release in German, French and Russian language.

Me:
I think having a “Beta” early with some flaws would have been better for the users, but on the other hand a unfinished product can easily ruin the reviews and the release.

  • Refund
Russ:
that you keep MWO content, but lose only the MW5 key and preorder bonus (e.g. Beta).
Epic is not paying for the refunds.
About 700 requests for refunds processed were processed as fast as possible the first day.

Me:
I think that keeping everything on MWO with a full refund will make it way to “good” to refund for people, because they can just get MW5 later without the Beta key and keep all the MWO stuff on top, which is nearly better than keeping the preorder (just because you get money back).

  • Preorder numbers
Russ:
about 20k preorders for MW5, felt pretty good.
Compared to Founders pack kickstart preorders with roughly 70k preorders netting about 5million.

Me:
With the ~700 refunds, that still gives them about 19k preorders. (AMA#2 he states 1200 refunds right now)
Depending on number of pissed MWO players refunding and non-MWO players refunding, they might go down to 15k or something.

  • Question round in Discord chat answered by Russ on the fly
Player:
How to win back the community after the shift?
Russ:
Think we’ve made the best choice because of the “marketing” on Epic having higher visibility than anything on Steam can give.

Player:
When you planned to play with Epics since mechCon, why did you lie to us?
Russ:
I’ve not planned from the time, so it was the truth from the time

Player:
Performance of MW5?
Russ:
MWO was always a pain with the CPU hungry engine.
We want to deliver the best performance in MW5, so we spend a lot of engineers on performance.
Their test Alien PC (RTX2080) with max settings hat 60-80fps.

Player:
When Metro Exodus … preorders could keep their steam keys. Do we also?
Russ:
Rules on Steam changed since then, so its not possible to get Games on Steam if its not released?

Player:
If we wait for 1 Year, can I have my Steam key instead of Epic?
Russ:
Didn’t even think about that, but will talk with the team about the possibilities here.
For now, all that is possible is to refund and then get the game on steam once it’s out there also.

Player:
How will Coop work in Epics?
Russ:
Same as in steam with your friendslist. The inviter will be the host.
Crossplay Epic/Steam is not yet clarified

Player:
When playing coop P2P in epic, do we need to keep the epic launcher running?
Russ:
Probably not, but not sure.

Player:
GOG for older MW games?
Russ:
I love the franchise, maybe MW3 and MW4 with Microsoft, but its complicated. I don’t know, but I’m interested

Player:
Demo shift earlier?
Russ:
November earliest
Closed Beta will be small and focused on the instant action

Player:
Why did you split playerbase by epic exclusive instead of releasing on all platforms?
Russ:
It wasn’t an option on Epics, as they are exclusive deals only. Epic is playing the rebels here with the 5% vs Steams 25%...

Player:
EGS constant connection to play?
Russ:
As said before, probably just for invite, if you can’t just use the friends IP address.

Player:
What about Gifting and Modding?
Russ:
Gifiting and modding is currently in the pipeline of Epic.
Modding gonna be a bit different, as there is no SteamWorks, but we will have modding.
We will release the editor with release, so you can get startet right away.
Sharing the mods will be with the Epic-integrated modding menu (roadmap of Epic). Otherwise, downloading with Nexusmods or else is always possible.

Player:
Was it that bad for the company financially that this move was required?
Russ:
Not really.
There was an article on Sarna that we might move to Epic and they were right.
The fact we stopped making mechpacks in MWO doesn’t mean we were bad on money.
The reason for Epic Game Store, as already mentioned (better visibility).

Player:
Do you know Borderlands 3 is releasing 3 days after MW5…?
Russ:
Also one reason why we moved the release.
I’ve also worked with Gearbox on BL2.

Player:
Why should we not refund:
Russ:
I feel like I’ve stated that. Whether you decide one way, we decided and stick with this because we knew we will step into the furnance, we still made the choice because we think this is the best path for the company and the game.
Even we made blunders in the past, but overall the decisions are made for the best of the game.
Agree with it or not, then decide for yourself.

Player:
Why December seem better than September?
Russ:
There were some games that were right in our spot.
November there is the new SW game…

Player:
Does Epic already have our user data?
Russ:
No. We have it. I don’t see any reason to give them data.
All we need from them is to get keys for you.

Player:
So everything you did was to just make better sales and more money? That’s all I’ve heard the whole time. Without caring about your consumers, you wont make a lot of sales.
Russ:
Is that really what you’ve got from everything I’ve said from the start since that’s not what I’ve said.
I feel like I’ve said a lot of things that are a lot of different.

Player:
Any odds of the beta being longer than just a month?
Russ:
Not likely, think even shorter.

Player:
Mechcon this year?
Russ:
Not a topic for today.

Player:
Do you anticipate adding other add-ons, skins… in epics store?
Russ:
Maybe…

Player:
Wonder if MW5 is still being worked on?
Russ:
Oh yea. definitely it’s being worked on.

Player:
Will work still be done in the pushed out release date?
Russ:
We will be taking advantage of every last second of additional time.

Player:
Do you have any plans to compensate those of us that don’t refund our keys with additional content?
Russ:
Not at the moment.
We actually talked about giving incentives to keep your preorder, but it would actually be MWO content.

Player:
Will there be further AMA to talk about progress between now and release?
Russ:
Yes there will be other AMAs. One more tomorrow for this topic (epic) and more for Modding and such.

Russ for this evening and cya tomorrow morning.

And as a nice finishing comment, I will leave the comment from TTB here:

You think Russ cares? There's a reason they are begin so gracious about the refund policy.

700 refunds is like 50 to 60 grand while Epic gave them millions. Disgruntled MWO players literally don't matter to PGI anymore.

That's the problem, PGI seems to be thinking solely on the short term corporate benefit vs. a long term community/player strategy. I understand making a business decision that favors company over clientele but this isn't a good long term business decision in my opinion.

Weird to see this one pop to the forefront.

Long story short, only four HOTAS systems are supported in the beta, where the full game's got more support supposedly.

If you were talking in an MW5 thread as opposed to this ancient necro thread, you might've got the answer sooner.

What control issues are you having in particular? If you're trying to use a HOTAS, apparently only the Thrustmaster T.16000M, Logitech extreme 3d pro, and Logitech/Saitek X52 are explicitly supported in the demo.

While I wish I could use my throttle and pedals, the game works just fine with KBAM
