The best strategy the vast majority of the time is to get the caps that are on the way and push your team to theta. Kill whatever is there, and clean up the rest. One low percentile dude wants to go back cap, fine. Everybody else push theta.
Played this way you will win far more often than you'll lose.
I also don't feel bad or angry if I am on the team that kills all twelve but loses to points. I play a giant stompy robot game with all these weapons so I can shoot stuff not run around and stand in a box.

And when people ask, "why are all the objectives basically just like Skirmish" please refer to the quoted post above. This is why we can't have nice things.

Now most lights are just this side of ineffective, carrying neither enough firepower or armor to fight at close ranges. They have no real job to do (why scout? Most times teams move in predictable paths to force engagement asap).
If you really wanted to play a light on conquest today you need to play the multiplier mini-game with your ineffective, but fast light in a dozen or so matches before you manage to influence an outcome to play conquest, only to be the only player playing the map objective while your team yells at you that the 'skirmish' is over here in the middle of the map.

As others have said, at least conquest gives additional goals. One of the things I find bad about Conquest, is that if you are a light getting caps and your team pulls a win due to your attention to getting them, you the capper get a crap score.

And when those other folks ask "why am I having these 10 game plus losing streaks, or why can't I get over 1 wlr or kdr" please refer to this guy's approach.
It's really simple dude, game is based around combat. Lots of matches I have seen guys like you trying to cap, leaving their team down and then they are running around while all the enemy has to do is flip a couple of cap points.
It's very few games I see where the enemy is wiped out, but manage to sneak a win on cap points. So few in fact that it is absolutely mind boggling that people are still shooting for that long shot win.
Really wished more players watched comp, talked to some of the better players, and learned about what map control is.

Are you kidding? The mini radar towers were cancer.
Throwing this ill thought of idea on maps designed to host a variety of other modes was ridiculous.
