Both ok in the lighter tonnage areas for AC2s.
That are not for low-skill users though as they are both arm mounted and you need to shield constantly. If you rarely twist, they won't work for you at all.

If I want to use the AC/2 family as my primary weapon system, which Mechs would you recommend to effective and not a liability to my team? I generally drive Inner Sphere only, and my collection skews towards Lights and Mediums at the moment, but I could use a Heavy if you recommend it. Thanks!
IS mechs:
For a Light you can run two AC's on a Raven, it's more of a novelty than a serious build but it's certainly fun.
For a Medium, I run two AC2s on my Vindicator paired with an ERPPC, you could fit three if you wanted. Generally, if they're ballistic builds mine are running the biggest they can fit, (e.g Heavy Gauss Hunchie, LBX-20 Cicada, twin LBX-10 Crab)
For a Heavy, The rifleman can run 4 and the Jager 6, With the Jager I use LBX2s instead just because it runs cooler.

EDIT: I also wonder how relevant one can be when your weapons are optimized for 1000m ranges. How often is engaging at that range realistic?

You will never engage anything out to 1000m besides general harassment. From a realistic standpoint I wish most of the weapon systems could reach out to those ranges. In regards to LBX's in battletech they are supposed to be solid rounds that disperse into grapeshot when striking through armor and internal components, but PGI for whatever reason decided to turn them into buckshot rounds I guess for gameplay variation.
If you are enjoying the Blackjack with RAC2's then I recommend the Shadowhawk 2H with 3 RAC2's. If you ever go up to the heavy category then the Champion can boat some mean RAC2's backed up with a boat of ER small lasers. For assaults I run a Mauler MX90 with just pure AC2's.
My main AC2 boat on the clan side is the Rifleman IIC 2. That thing is a monster with possibly the highest damage output potential out of all the variants. If you want a more traditional "anti-air" flak mech it can boat 6 LBX-2's just as effectively.

3 AC2
4 er med lasers
a bunch of heat sinks.
Very good mech in itself (one of the best on IS side) and has good ranged firepower and extremely cold ac DPS.
Dont have lots of AC but you have lasers as well. And actually good hitboxes unlike riflemen/blackjacsk and dires.

The Bushwacker X1 is full stop the best RAC2 boat in the entire game. Nothing can facetank better than the fish-face profile of a Bushwacker, and the legs are plenty thin enough for the job. If you want something fatter, there's also the Marauder that can add MPLs or LLs into the mix.
Definitely go out of your way to pick up a Bushwacker X1, it's not only a good RAC boat, but one of the best Mediums in the game as a general rule.
