there was all that sky is falling stuff about the evil overlords who control Epic going to install spyware on your computer and steam was so much safer. Except... I just found something that was installed when I last updated steam 10 months ago called teamviewer 11. Now I didn't know it was there till 20 mins ago, didn't give permission for its installation, and I don't remember why I updated my Steam launcher ten months ago but it certainly wasn't to put that teamviewer thing on it.

What does teamviewer do ?

well its a proprietary software application for remote control, desktop sharing, online meetings, web conferencing and file transfer between computers"

"
Remote service scams using TeamViewer

TeamViewer and similar services have been used to commit technical support scams via telephone calls. People are called, either at random or from a list, by criminals claiming to represent a computer support service that has identified the victim's computer as being infected by malware, most often using the name of companies such as Microsoft. They then ask the victim to give them access to their computer by installing a remote control service, which can allow the attacker to infect the computer with malware or to delete or copy personal files. A Wired journalist investigating the scams was asked by a scammer to install TeamViewer.[25][26] It was reported that ransomware programs were utilizing TeamViewer as a tool to obtain remote access to infected machines.[27][28] In the United Kingdom, the Internet service provider TalkTalk blocked many remote access tools to protect its customers from remote service scams.[29] They remain blocked as of April 2019."

Thanks a lot Steam !!!

TeamViewer doesn't do **** unless you give remote caller access.

And no I'm not one of those "evil epic QQ" persons.

I've been using Steam since forever. Keep it updated at all times, too. No TeamViewer on my PC. Couldn't find anything linking Steam an illicit installations of TeamViewer on a quick Google search, either.

Not calling you out or anything, but are you positive it was just a regular Steam update that installed it on your PC? Cause it sounds awfully weird that a Steam spyware attack this obvious went unnoticed by everyone but you.

No TeamViewer from Steam either. You sure you didn't opt-in?

In fact, TeamViewer is designed for Steam and Origin, so the chances that Steam built it is pretty much zero

https://en.wikipedia...wiki/TeamViewer

No mention of Steam

Not only the abov, but team viewer is currently version 14.

Some people running servers found out the people that host their servers have this installed with the service (for their Network hosting) for troubleshooting reasons and that version specifically is 11.
Are you running a server? The complaint I found on Google is that the service hosting his servers autoinstalls it any time he opens his server if TeamViewer 11 isn't present.

Steam has a file that keeps track of user data to hold payment information, play times, system information, etc. However that is pretty standard even Skype and discord does that (cept play time).

His post is incorrect. Steam itself doesn't install team viewer. He doesn't seem to understand how an MSI works, especially in terms of how an MSI delivered by Steam works.

Steam already grabs the exact same data Epic does. Exact same. One is every bit as much spyware as the other. Steam absolutely does sell your information, as does Epic, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook and Google.

Steam absolutely has security issues. 72 million steam accounts were hacked earlier this year.

There's no moral component to either platform, neither is better than the other in that regard.

However Steam is a better overall interface by far (though the recent UI changes irk me) and Epic has exclusives like Xbox and PS4, which is ****.

No i am not running a server, yes I am sure it was installed along with the steam update, they both happened the same day within minutes of one another.

Sorry, there is no connection between Steam and Teamviewer. Teamviewer, btw. is a professional conference and support software with remote control functions. The later needs to be activated.

It is possible you installed it with another software. Certainly not with Steam.

And Epic Store sucks. Not just because it is badly done but because I don't need another store and its exclusives. Until MW5 comes to Steam or, best version, GoG, it is a no buy. A 80% discount may weaken my resolve. Let's see what comes first.

And don't forget the free $10 gift thingy, that will get recharged after every buy over $15 (if I understand it correctly).
So basically you get ten bucks of discount for every purchase until 1st of May.
"Use the $10 Epic Coupon to buy an eligible game of $14.99 or more on the store (during the promotional period) and you’ll receive another $10 Epic Coupon. Note: Coupons expire on May 1, 2020 2:59am EST."
So right now, MW5 costs $31.

I hate Epic, I hate every store except Steam, but a bargain is a bargain is a bargain, as the Ferengi would say :)

Beside Epic or not. I find that a very interesting marketing strategy as it incentivies buying another game more, I think, then just a flat discount.

Also combined with the discount on lots of games they currently offer and you add the 10$ on top....that is sometimes a nice drop in price.

*Sigh* Might as well chime in.. I also use STEAM and have never had something called TeamViewer installed on my PC. I can only assume you added it yourself (possibly by accident, I've downloaded a few programs by accident myself). So as quite a few have said here, pretty sure it wasn't STEAM.

As for EPIC, I caved in and got it to get MW5. I will agree, it is mediocre at best, but I have had no issues with it, and I WAS one of the anti-EPIC store guys originally, including cancelling my pre-order of MW5. Could it get a facelift? Sure, but its not THAT bad and it doesn't have as much clutter as STEAM. BTW.... MW5 Really isn't THAT bad. Could it use a few changes here and there? Sure, but nothing that can't be fixed later and nothing game breaking.
