Russ mentioned a career mode last time he was on vid with an update to MW5. Nothing specific IIRC was mentioned.

It's nothing new. Battletech had Roguetech long before HBS released a Career mode and put in some challenges to go with it.

Nope I am not sure, as allways with Russ
Sometimes I feel like Russ realy likes Battletech/Mechwarrior but he just isn't the right person for giveing directions on gamedesign etc. Maybe he should stick with getting contracts for the company and managment stuff.
As for the Mod...didn't know that there was one like that. Nice....maybe I will not wait till the official mode?
On the other hand I have lots of other games to play and it shouldn't be to long till the patch comes. March I think it was?

I hope the career mode will be free as it should have been part of the game from the start and is something that was promised in a way at the beginning of the development with "You can choose your starting point and get faction specific mechs to start with".

Essentially, yes. Same as campaign, only without the campaign but with new chained contracts and map zones which may or may not be present in a campaign. Some new tech as well, but nothing groundbreaking.
