Atlas is a Mech that was designed in the Star League era BUT they're mostly associated with the Lyrans.

As for my list:

Light: Raven
Medium: Centurion (if you read the entry for the mech from sarna.net you'll know why).
Heavy: Axman or Cataphract
Assault: If it were available--Devastator [Which itself was drawn up by Gen Kerensky himself!]

Edit: I should also note that the Devastator didn't really get up to it's true specs until 3044 (but it is 3049 right?) BUT it was prototyped in 3033 with downgraded weapons.

I concur the Cammando is a well rounded mech to start with for house Davion.

I wish Warhammer and Marauder weren't unseens. I like both, and if it was available I'd most happily run me a Warhammer. Swap the PPC's for large lasers and add some more heat sinks or more MG ammo. Slam and move, slam and move.

The Cataphract is the next best thing.
The X1 has:
PPC
AC/10
4 Medium Lasers

the X2:
Large Laser
AC/10
2 Medium Lasers
SRM 4

Cataph is ugly as all hell though. I LOVED the look of the Warhammer, it was exactly what a mech should like like ya ask me. Only way to make it better would be two shoulder missile pods instead of 1, to make it balanced.

My choices would be:
Light: Valk or jenner
med: Dervish (I love that mek, used right it's a real pain in the tookus)
heavy: Tbolt, Jager, Osc-3R
Assault: Victor or Longbow (7q vairent)

I'm really hoping for the dervish.

I'd have to go Valkyrie followed by the Commando I do have a soft spot for the Wasp though don't think I want to go beyond the realms of Centurian in size, I'll leave heavies and assault mechs to those that like to be big targets.

Couldn't they just use the Project Phoenix resculps as a way to put the mechs in?

Not sure if anyones asked this yet or not, but is the Firestarter a option? It is a great light mech with decent speed decent weapons and jumpjets.

Or Wolfhound would have to be my other choice. Good speed, great armor for a light, no jumpjets, but 1 large laser for ranged support or "First blood".

Let's see...

Light: Valkyrie-better armed and armored then a Commando and it has jump jets.
Medium: Enforcer-probably one of the best trooper mechs around.
Heavy: Caesar-forget the Cataphract, this spin-off is a lot better. Gauss rifle and medium pulse laser goodness.
Assault: Victor-have to go with the old standby. The gauss rifle upgrade is even better.
