How about you choose a 'Mech from either Medium or Light catagory but any 'Mech afterwards is either bought or Salvaged?

And I'd Start with a Commando

For my picks, I'd go with a Valkyrie as my light pick. I agree with most of the forum that the Enforcer and Centurion are good picks for medium mechs. Though the Grasshopper is not a traditional Davion mech, I think it would work well as a starter heavy mech. For an assault, I'd follow the crowd and go with a Victor as well. Not that I'd expect to get it straight out of the gate.

Griffin. We've got to have a Griffin. Nothing says Davion like the mech that sits in the Prince's throne room.

The throne room on Tharkad? Blech. I guess the confusion between FedSuns and FedCom hasn't been helped by how houses are organized right now though.

Light = Raven
Medium = Centurion

I don't care about heavies or assaults that much. They're only good for urban fighting, where it's only close combat.
Otherwise, lights and mediums are fine for the other huge landscapes in the Mechwarrior universe.

Raven as a Davion starter mech? Hanse is rolling in his grave for that!

If I can choose, and can start at a Medium...Enforcer. If we have to start at a light I would say a Val or the like. The only way an Urbie is worth taking is if we are fighting city block to city block. On an open battlefield the Urbie is a trash cane you can knock over easy. I thught the starting date was 3015, or am I wrong?

Going to go off of memory here...and the timeline becomes important here, because alot of iconic house designs didnt emerge until the clan invasion.
I prefer light and medium mechs, so my knowledge of heavy and assault designs is not as good, but off the top of my head ;

Commando = Steiner Mech
Sentinel = Steiner Mech
Raven = Liao Mech
Shadow Hawks = Been in service for a long time, almost every house uses them
Dervish = Lyran Mech, sorry guys, although I would argue its similar to the shadow hawk in the fact that it is used in several houses
Trebuchet = Technically a house Marik Mech, but in service with alot of houses.
Cicada = House Marik Design I believe? cant remember
Whitworth = This is one that I am not sure of would have to look it up.
Watchman = Not sure on the timeline, but is a Davion Mech
Assassin = universal design used by many houses
Hunchback = universal design used by many houses
Uziel = not available until after clan invasion

Davion : Valkyrie (unseen doubt we will see it), Javelin, Centurion, Enforcer, Wolverine,
Steiner : Commando, Battle Hawk, Sentinel, Griffin, Dervish
Kurita : Panther, Jenner, Gladiator,
Marik : Vulcan, Cicada, Trebuchet,
Liao : Raven, Vindicator,

Thats all I can come up with off the top of my head, would have to go to the source books for more, and im not going to go searching through storage to get em right now.

Light Mech: Javelin. Jumpjets, SRMs or Medium Lasers,torso mounted weapons so you can still punch.
Medium Mech: Centurion. AC10, LRMs, Medium Lasers, some armor, jack of all trades.
Heavy Mech: Grasshopper. Mostly energy weapon loadout, JJ's, good armor.
Assault Mech: Stalker. Large and medium lasers, LRM's, SRM's, some armor. Here's hoping for a good redesign.

Commando = Steiner Mech
Sentinel = SLDF mech - design was discontinued
Raven = Liao Mech, but thought to be a House Davion Mech because of the numbers salvaged by Davion forces in the 4th Suc War.
Shadow Hawks = Every house uses them
Dervish =Davion mech produced on New Avalon
Trebuchet = Technically a house Marik Mech, but in service with alot of houses.
Cicada = House Marik Mech
Whitworth = More of a House Kurita Mech - factory destroyed
Watchman = Davion Mech, produced after the Clan Invasion
Assassin = More of a Davion Mech - factory destoyed
Hunchback = Marik Mech, used by many houses
Uziel = not available until after clan invasion

I've got my source books, so I cleared up some for you.

As with most mechs its more a question of how long have they been around. Lots of them have been handed down from generation to generation.

Rarely a mech becomes total scrap. More often then not they have some critical component shot out and shutdown. Although MW4 and other mech games wanna make you believe they go nuke on you every time.

So the longer a mech has been around, and still in production or not, they will spread around to other houses by way of salvage. Ofcource one cannot expect that the latest newest models will show up in your army.

That said hmm in urban terrain i would go with a grasshopper, while in the open i would prefer an catapult. Then again i would not say no to an atlas or battlemaster either..... ooow darn its so hard to choose :)
Hmm if i had to pick a light then probably a jenner, for mediums a phoenix hawk.

I'll fight in whatever I can afford for the house willing to pay the most and give me the salvage rights.

Since we are going for starter mechs, I agree with the posters that think the Iconic designs of a house ought to be the starters. It also works because in most cases these designs aren't the best ones available in 3049. While the lost tech versions of mechs are on the way off the production lines, your Avatar is not going to have access to them just yet. If the Devs are thinking the upgrade variants will be either something you can have your ride converted to, or you can just straight out buy once you have started play.
Starters for the FedSuns:

Light: Javelin (since the Valkyrie is unseen)
Medium: Centurion(Most common mech in the AFFS.) Enforcer (it is the mech people picture when you say Medium Davion Mech.)
Heavy: Jagermech ( Unless the unseen make it in. Lets face it though, starters will be the most basic/worst mech in the stable you have access to.)
Assault: Victor.
