Me and my brother are going to start a very small, self contained fire support, long range patrol, and scouting unit. It's going to be me in a Catapult, and him in a lighter mech, probably a heavier medium as a scout and close range support. My Catapult is tweaked to have extra armor, ammo, and heat sinks.

The trouble I'm having is 1.) a name and B.) Does anyone have the faintest idea on how game play is going to work in this regard? Will people in game be able to hire us with in game money, because from what I was lead to believe there's supposed to be a very interactive universe, not just a bunch of death match fights like MW4. Any ideas or speculation?

Yeah, I read that. I suppose they probably don't have any information on how contracts and such will work just yet. When you various people created some kind of mercenary unit, how did you name it?

Be aware that the devs have said that there is no "metagame" until maybe december. None of the stuff in the dev logs will be active. We merc units will have no special functions or hiring for many months.

So I guess you can just group together as a pair and pretend someone is paying you. In the long run, Lone Wolves might be able to get some type of compensation for assisting a registered Merc unit - but that is a big "maybe". So you can be a pair of "Lone Wolves" together I suppose rather than mercs.

I hope its like similiar setup as Eve except the ground fights dictate who gets the planets and hopefully a simpiler market.

If planets pay C`s or better yet special Items for Mech construction etc then I could see Merc`s having huge value in game as "Care Bear/Campers" types might want a planet worth alot but not be able to take and hold it without Mercs.

But really its the only way I see them being any value. And still in this case a 2 man Mech Merc Corp seems like its very very Niche, Either guys are gonna wanna hire half a team worth to fill out numbers or a Single guy starting a small corp/clan hiring a entire team to get attention so he can recruit to hell and back.

Big organized Units will have great scouts and great long range just to be considered organised so Im not sure unless its very Eveish and you can take certain low grade planets with small units how a 2 man team will make money.

It is going to be a bunch of random matches like what you see in World of Tanks. A lot of people have tried to build hype and spread rumors that there is an open world, however these are most likely false. Expect random battles and later down the line planetary control.

Sorry to say this is definitively not going to happen. There is no way they can make this anywhere close to EvE. Too much programming, and it would not fit with the universe or their vision for the game.

Well... as for planetary capture the rules aren't that hard. Most of the time the Mercs are just here to lend some firepower, they don't really care for the planets they're walking on.

Of course that will depend on the contract they may have accepted. Before accepting the contract, it should be possible to chose the reward like :
  • A brand new module (weapon, etc.) worth a lot of C-Bills
  • A fistfull of C-Bills
  • A new Mech
  • A whole planet
  • Or the contract could serve as a trial for a Merc before he joins a clan
That would require quite a lot of trading mechanics but it's doable for devs like that.

Well, as for the Battletech universe, anything can happen ! I just hope that the devs will be able to implement some of thoses ideas on the long run. That would improve greatly the metagame

But maybe I'm dead wrong...

Semi related topic, I'm trying to start a small community for people just like OP that want a group to play with but don't necessarily want to join an already existing group - www.carrioncrows.com/
