And while a WVR is somewhat XL-friendly, is there really the need to go XL300 instead of LF300?

Yes, there is. XL 300s are a good engine for speed and tonnage availability. On the 7K, the LFE300 can only run four tons of ammo, no AMS and only an extra DHS (like so: WVR-7K ). The XL300 keeps the decent speed to tackle any light mechs harassing your team, while also still being survivable on the field. Plus, there is a left arm that can be used as a semi-decent shield should you need it. You can also run just the SSRM6s and a tag in the head and then shield with both arms, like so:

WVR-7K

Streaks are generally useful for two things: killing Lights, and padding damage numbers. For any other application normal SRMs coupled with good aim are superior - but if other people are using aiming weapons (and they will be,) it can still be effective to bring a streakboat into quick play. The reduced effectiveness against 'mechs with real guns is somewhat offset by the superior dps of SSRMs versus long-range weapons like ERPPCs and ERLLs - and the devastating effect of boated Streaks against Lights.

I've improved enough that I am now getting around 200 damage per match and usually surviving to the end.
I am mostly using my Vapor Eagle with this build:

Vapor Eagle (VGL-1)

Code (loadout):

Code (skills):

Armor:
Ferro Fibrous

Heat Sinks:
Double

Structure:
Endo-Steel

Missile Guidance:
Standard

Head:
Armor (17)

Center Torso:
Armor (82/0)
Clan XL Engine 330
Jump Jets - Class IV x 1

Left Torso:
Armor (59/0)
C-ER Lrg Laser x 1
C-LB10-X AC x 1
C-LB 10-X Ammo x 2

Right Torso:
Armor (59/0)
C-ER Lrg Laser x 1

Left Arm:
Armor (28)

Right Arm:
Armor (28)

Left Leg:
Armor (59)
Jump Jets - Class IV x 2

Right Leg:
Armor (59)
Jump Jets - Class IV x 2

I managed to do 500 damage one time. I try to hang around my allies and then snipe the enemies from the side or rear once they are busy with my allies.

You should really use these engines for the building:

I tend to forget and just take notes from the ingame mechlab.

Here's the link for my Vapor Eagle build: VGL-1

Too many jump jets and too big engine. Your DPS is weak, not enough heat sinks to handle only two lasers, LBX is pretty bad at range and you keeping ammo in the side torso, where it can explode easely.

If you going to play as long-range sniper and hang out with your allies, you don't need that much speed and jump power, better sink it into firepower. VGL is pretty strong gun platform, if you downgrade engine it can easely get on the level of 60-65t IS 'Mechs.

PPC build with staggered 2+1 combo:

Gaussvomit for alpha justice:

If you want to be aggresive flanker, take smaller lasers with autocannon:

IMO, there is better 'Mechs for sniping in the back, Shadow Cat is probably most prominent example of ECM backstabber.

This how proper "I'm stabbing people in the back when they are distracted" gameplay looks:

There is a difference between 'Mechs which better at harassing and team play, and Vapor Eagle are more suited for team play.
