Didn't you get the memo? Assaults are food for lights -- "circle of life" and all that rot (supposedly: assaults kill heavies, heavies kill mediums, mediums kill lights, and lights kill assaults).
In practice, all classes aim for the assaults. It is our lot in life. Given a choice of targets, the enemy will always choose the assault. Get used to it.
In my opinion, in order to be an effective assault pilot, you must lead -- and lead boldly. Know where to go before anyone else does. Even at ~60kph you should be in the front. Start fights and end them. Your allies are not there to coddle and protect you. Don't expect an escort. You are there to serve and protect
them. In reality, you serve as both the tip of the spear and the shield. During a push, soak the hits so your allies can deal death unmolested. Challenge the most fearsome opponent, keep his attention, and put him down. Know this: You will not survive all engagements. If you go down, go down with death's gleam in your eye. If you are picking the assault to gain more survivability, you chose poorly. Use a light mech if you want to "live to fight another day". Typically, as an assault, the only way out of a bad situation is to overpower all opposition. This, as you might imagine, doesn't always work out. There is rarely an opportunity for escape. You must be the perfect balance of courage and wisdom -- almost preternatural -- knowing by instinct what to do and when; even before there is any evidence. A tall order, but one that is fun and challenging to fulfill.
So don't whine and blame others when death inevitably comes. Learn from it and hone your skills. Draw upon this knowledge and ask yourself next time "what could I have done better?" In nearly all cases,
you could have done something to mitigate your demise: moved faster, built wiser, seen the rotation, expected the sniper, rolled your armor to get that one last shot, bailed-out of that trap, or been more aggressive. You team's attentiveness to "saving the assaults" is not the problem. The map and your position on it at the start are not to blame. You are.
Affect change.
