The ATM thing is more about skill gap than the weapon system
In proper T1 games ATM have a lot of weaknesses and are not top of the food chain type of weapons.
In T1 direct fire weapons rule mostly imo.
In situations with skill gap
ATM's can be very strong.

Yup. T2 is about when missiles of any kind tend (excluding MRM which still have their place) to be discarded due to their excessive easy-to-use counters. (or their weaknesses compared to other weapon types)

The game was also doomed when it became clear that pgi simply refused to fix severe bugs. Community warfare was supposed to be the big heart of this game but failed miserably when they threw pug teams vs organized and competitive groups that just massacred pugs in faction warfare for 30 mins, even camping their spawn. Completly killing that game mode apart from some clans that still play it. Escort mode which everybody was hyped about? They completly messed it up by forcing you to cover some über dumb ai bot. Anything they touched in this game or tried to do failed horribly on such a scale that it was inevitable for this game to fail and the servers will be shut down. It is remarkable though that this game has survived that long as buggy as it is. With that little content. Even solaris has, once again, failed horribly.
And you copmlain about a lack of maps?
You do realize that evry single penny you might have invested into this game was used to create mw5, right?
So, complaining about maps......is a little late now. Whereas 'late' is a massive, massive, obscenly huge and vast understatement.
