I'm just curious. Did they spend the Epic money developing MW5, instead of developing their cash-cow MWO?

They paid back the loans they had on developing MW5 and got a big pay day.

They reinvested it in 3 projects:
  • Finishing MW5:Mercs
  • MW5:HOTIS DLC
  • Transverse 2.0

What Russ said back then is that part of the money went into developing MW5. Everything else is speculation.

hah, I see what you did there.

Ngl tho, I kinda wanted that game to actually happen. But the timing was.. well, not great to put it lightly with a heavy dose of sugar coating.

Me to; The whole thing game me a Tachyon: The Fringe vibe.

Watch the trailer again. You basically got a Bora pilot sitting in a bar listening to the Tachyon News Service about an attack on "the fringe" colonies before picking up a job. Not to mention the drones in the flashback looking like dread pirates.

Just imagine if they could have got George Ledoux and Bruce Campbell to provide voice over....

AAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Dude, they didn't even properly finished MW5 and MWO, and they still have this **** waaaay back 2014? MWO is even poorly handled, on life-support, and they have out of ideas how to revitalize it that they have to crowdsource the idea, and they might as well E-Beg for money.

I'd rather get Subverse at this point.

They did fail hard and if they had external funding it would have been a waste of money bcs the power of Chris Roberts Personality Cult and the history and fame of Elite did suck up all publicity, public goodwill and non-commercial funding.
They would have closed shop years ago bcs of that...

The Epic money allowed 3 more months of MW5 development. Regardless what your opinion is of MW5, it would have been a worse product without the 3 months of development.

The money is also, as far as I'm aware looking at similar deals with other games, an advance on sales, and not just money from nowhere. Anyone saying it was a cash grab is either uninformed, an idiot, or being disingenuous and should be looked upon with suspicion as to what their motives are Posted Image

(that last bit is a joke)

That 9 mil figure is based on the difference in fees that Steam and the Epic store charges, and 1 million theoretical sales. We don't know how much PGI got for exclusivity.

Nor how many copies of MW5 PGI sold...

I will add that according to Xsolla, about 20-30% of a game's first year revenue is from pre-orders, and according to Russ, there were 20k pre-orders. I'm guessing most orders are the 50$ pack, but let's just say the average is 55$. 20kx55$ is 1.1mil. Take the lower 20% estimate and you get 5.5 mil revenue total for MW5. I'm sure Epic paid a LOT more than that, which is why PGI made a good business decision to go exclusive. They would have had to close doors with just 5.5m.

It got them the tie in event in fortnite, with the mech for the season that dropped around the same time as the epic release. That particular tie in was universally panned in the fortnite community and didn't go too well.

There was no tie in with fortnite. Whatever mech abomination that was in fortnite had zero to do with MW5. The mech doesn't even look remotely like any other MW5 mech (maaaaaaybe the nova cat, but that isn't in MW5). Heck you'd be better off claiming it was some kind of bizarre Titanfall tie in. Whoever told you that is drinking same weird *** koolaid.

They couldn't get permission to use the IP so they had to create something outrageously different to avoid getting Harmony Golded.
