Racing games of old had an AI mechanic called rubberbanding, where the vehicle would move at insane amounts of speed to catch up with the leading vehicle... Posted Image

Most racing games still have it, although it is a lot more subtle than it used to be.

I´m a little bit hardcore in this opinion, but I think that New players must be put away of assault mechs.

For their securitiy-

Assaults are a powerful tool but they need the better map and battlefield awareness in the game to not to be piles of free damage.

I cant count the times i´ve seen a cadet in an Atlas diying in the 4 first minutes of the match-
And thier reasonings are clear : "Wow, assaults are expensive, full of armor and weapons, i must do better in an assault"
"****, i´m in the most powerful monster of this game and i can´t survive 2 minutes and do 200 damage. Im too bad for this game, -or most frequently- this game sucks, lights OP, my team don´t helps me.... Etc, etc ,etc "

400 matches could be enough. Or better, make "Assaulting licence" an achievement. You have to KMMD 100 assaults in medium and light mechs to be able to pilot one...

Cadets in lights and mediums will learn much sooner the maps and postioning, will survive a lot more in the matches, and will learn from first hand how easy or difficult is to kill an assault mech before to jump into one...

And od course something as ;
"Assault mechs are powerful, but slow and sluggish. Only the most experienced pilots can take profit of their superior firepower. Be sure to learn the map and the posible team tactics before to try assault mechs "
In a good english, sure...

The problem with locking the Assaults to new players is it reinforces that liner progression of graduating to bigger mech. So when the newbie unlocks one, what do you think he'll do. Jump straight in one without thinking.

Anything you do to lock assaults has to be mirrored with lights to
  • Lock new pilots to mediums/heavies only,
  • After 100 games in heavies unlock the assaults,
  • After 100 games in Mediums unlock the lights.
  • After 100 games in Lights AND Assaults, unlock FP.
