There may not be the time to have a MWO2....
See it's us Gen Xers that have the Robotech (and Gundam) Nostalgia. That one thing that makes this universe stand out. Generic stompy robot #3 will never match a Warhammer, or Rifleman, or the beloved Urbanmech, for us mechdads. For the newer kids, they werent there, cooing with their friends in school about the new Valkrie toy that just got released, as we rushed home together to watch the next episode of Lin Minmay being an annoying girl-thing. You kids just wont get it. So when us Gen Xers retire, who's going to be there to pick up the torch?
Sure Battletech is experiencing a bit of a revival because GW is upsetting their fans, but the TT is not what made us fans. The TT was a vessel of our fanship for the cartoons, and toys. But to those new players, I think they just want the dakka. They dont care about your Urbanmech. They will be fine with Generic stompy robot #3. And you dont need to license an IP to make that.
So that gives us maybe 15 years tops on the far end before I could see anyone willing to remake a MWO. And on the short end... well we still have MWO. MW5 was just released, and since it didnt include team deathmatch, that ship has sailed. So now I dont think it'll be viable to make a 'better' version until both these games are dead and buried, which could be another 10 years. So that gives us like a 5 year spread where another game is viable, in like a decade.
Hopefully it happens, and it will be something amazing, like a persistant world MMO where you can drop into an ongoing war, that never ends. Something like Eve or Rust but with many planets and even more missions, so that both the casual weekender and the sweaty try-hards can both play together and make a difference, or a name for themselves..
One can only dream, But it's going to need somebody who wants to see that dream come true, and it's going to have to be one of us, as a mechgrandad, to do it.
