Add an option to turn off seeing bolt ons. Bam problem solved, those that want them to stay on, have them. Those who don't want to see them, don't.

Better Solution :D

Allow people on a per-Mech basis to select whether or not Bolt-Ons fall off their own Mech when shot. The checkbox for doing so could be easily added to the Bolt-Ons customization interface, between the list of Bolt-Ons and the "Revert Changes" Button that happens to be just below. Then each person on the battlefields can choose whether they're making themself more easily visible to the Enemy throughout the whole Match that they're playing, or if they're allowing those ugly position-revealing items to fall off in order to allow them to hide and change position in order to come back up elsewhere and surprise the Enemy with a shot from another angle. :)

Frankly, the fact that things like...
  • game balance in general (Such as hitting a Bolt-On and not hurting the Enemy Mech... Also what someone else mentioned about parts appearing that don't actually have a Hitbox at all when they should... An ugly & unnecessary Exploit made by the Developers themselves???)
  • user choice on Bolt-Ons equip state (Games are always better with choice... Why do developers never get this?!?!?)
  • unnecessary entrapment (Somebody is going to get angry to the point of insanity when they find out it was the Bolt-Ons not falling off that prevented them from escaping an Enemy at all... Mark my words, there is a backlash incoming!!!)
  • deception as a natural combat element (Starting to think Guerrilla Warfare has become a Lost Art with MWO because of all the "Prideful NASCAR Lemmings" which forcibly ruin the fun for anyone not playing only their way!)
  • alienation of part of the Player Base (Some people don't take well to an unnecessary lack of choice being forced upon them. This change should have been designed for all kinds of players, and NOT only the crowd who wants them attached!)
  • PGI's own business and the bottom line associated with ruining certain elements to the value of Bolt-Ons when people realize that they no longer want to have anything to do with them, and stop purchasing any at all
...all was not very well thought about in making this change really leaves me shaking my head. Heck, it's no wonder that 'D A T A' is freaking out about the incoming nightmare that will ensue. I can see it too, and it's going to have a nightmarish backlash when things proverbially hit the fan due to how the game's mechanics will change. Essentially, anyone who doesn't want to be hurt by Bolt-Ons remaining attached & static will have to manually take them back off, and that WILL include me except for a very tiny exception. :(

there's not that much that really covers large areas and besides that bolt-ons are just stupid expensive to really cover your mechs in them.

any of the shoulder pads or by far the worst bushes that can make it hard to see hitboxes.

But pgi doesn't care about that They want money from bolt ons and they simply aren't worth buying for QP or FP because they just fall off. No one plays solaris and that is what they were meant for so now pgi needs to make them stick on so they can get their money balance be damned.

Thats not a better solution. If they want to add that as an option too then it would be fine. But if we only got one then I would prefer the option of just not seeing the bolt-ons at all.

Bolt-ons were a cool idea...but not so much the bolt-ons they actually designed. They're really...not cool. And a lot of them look bad on mechs. They shouldn't have made every bolt-on for every mech and then selected specific ones to go with each chassis, or sets of chassis.

would be cool if some of the boltons did things like the urbie sirens. give me head lights or a melee weapon or something.

Heck... What about the Shoulder-Mounted SearchLight Bolt-Ons that are available for some Mech Chassis which could be made to actually be functional and light up, thereby casting a glow of light about & around the field? :o

You lie, a lot more players will start buying bolt-ons in order to obscure their hitboxes. It's P2W under the guise of "cosmetics only". Of course it while probably backfire given how it will draw attention and give the enemy someone to focus fire on.

Has anyone actually had success making a mech with really obscured hit boxes in the mechlab yet? I'm struggling to do so. Ghille on a Rifleman with matching paint is my best so far.

Given some of the earlier discussion in this thread...

One of the Blood Asp bolt-ons add blades to the shoulder pods, if you don't have any ST weapons mounted, the bolt-on will add a fake shoulder pod.

Chainsaws, helipads, and shoulder guards would also serve to obscure hitboxes in a variety of ways.

Oh that is interesting about the Blood Asp bolt on. That's kinda broken (surprise)
I totally forgot about the heli pads, yeah they are huge "shields".

...and then if you add some Decals to certain equipped Bolt-Ons with just the right Mech selected too, VonBruinwald, it would really create some seriously obfuscated Hitbox Geometry to contend with. Even if you can not do it with some Mechs as a base, others apparently can gain some weird visual attributes which throw people off as to what the actual Hitboxes are. :(

I'm aware but was wondering if anyone had actually put together a good example. There's a lot of talk and all the tools (bolt-ons) are in the game already so I'm surprised nobody has produced a good example, as in a screen-shot, to demonstrate the potential issue.
