I'd find a way to shell out cash for a Gawr Gura hero mech with the appropriate skin and colors.

I appreciate the lore bound folks here. My point is there are certain player of the game that really deserve some credit for their ability to play. They do not have to be youtubers, just players that when you see them on the battlefield you think, damn lets get that guy!
Light mech pilots I know are good:
Set your *** on fire
Capt DeadPool
TunaFist
Players like that who you know have abilities and respect enough to go to PGI and say hey... If you had a hero mech that this person put together as a build, add some quirks a warhorn, you would definitely buy it.
Look I have played this game from when I was a teenager in the 80s. I dont give a hoot about books or lore, just the fun of running it and playing it.
Some of these guys would make me say yea... I would like a mech they put their name on.

There is a way to reconcile both: create Hero Mechs based on notable players, and ask CGL to canonize their names, e.g.: Hauptmann/Captain/Tai-i Oliver "Baradul" Himburg, *insert favourite unit*, and his *insert favourite*.
You could start a Mech design contest for the best hero variants, a short story contest explaining the backstory, and so on.
This could be fun. But I have to admit I would be far less exited if they just said "Hey, Baradul is a cool dude, here is a random new Mech variant with his name on it. Pay for it. See you!"
