It's a chicken-vs-egg scenario. The Uziel was introduced in late 2000 in a MW 4 expansion and officially became canon in early 2002 in the 3067 tech manual. However it got there, it got there, its canon. (Unlike the Roughneck, which remains non-canon. Whatevs.)
Uziel was the cover mech in the box of the Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance PC game, and that's the base MW4 game.
Uziel was also featured in Mechassault.
Uziel has one thing over the Roughneck. Microsoft owns digital rights to Battletech, PGI doesn't. There is also the fact that Microsoft is a megacorporation. So there is plenty of clout there.
If I recall, it wasn't the Microsoft special mech that Microsoft used to demonstrate its influence to Mechwarrior and Battletech.
I think the Uziel wasn't the only Microsoft origin mech. There was the Mad Cat Mk II in the game, and the Blood Asp that first appeared in Mechassault.
The mechs were designed in such a way as to create an IP fortress so no one like Harmony Gold can sue them for likeness to any other existing mech from other franchises.
