Target Lock Not Working

Hi guys,

been having a bit of an annoying issue
just to give you a perspective, I have been on this game for 6 years now, and played fairly regularly for at least 2 years, so I know the basics, this is not any of those.

I used to utilise LRMs in a lot of my builds and played them a lot. about 2 years ago I started having this issue that my "target lock" key stopped working. as in, I get in the game, enemy targets come up but I can't lock onto anything, no ECM or jamming or anything, even the automatic locking that happens when you hold aim at a target for a while doesn't work. it's like locking function just doesn't exist. then suddenly a few minutes in the game it starts working like normal for a bit, then it goes away, and so on and so forth

it was so frustrating then that I left the game altogether, came back after 2 years, same problem. I know it's not a hardware issue, the button on my stick works fine. I removed and reinstalled the game, no difference. everything else works, just no target locks for me....
any ideas?

Did you verify this by going to the testinggrounds, academie or maybe even creating a lobby and playing around with the targeting function ?

Otherewise this will be hard to reproduce..

Furthermore did you contact support ?

About 2 years ago there was big change in LRM behaviour.

Read this text, please: Patch Notes

Important parts of the text are:
► Weapon Lock-On system Overhaul
► Direct Line of Sight
► No Direct Line of Sight

Please note that the lock-on speed changes depending on if it is a direct or indirect fire. It also depends on the distance of the target.

Can you record what happens? This is a bit confusing to try to figure out.

Some mechs have stealth armour that makes it so you cannot lock them at all until the stealth is countered. mechs under ECM cannot be locked at long ranges.

I'll be damned, I finally figured it out, it was a physical button problem, that same key works when testing and calibrating the stick, works with another game, but intermittent with MWO, go figure...
since it was working anywhere else and all other keys were working I never had any reason to remap the key, remapped to keyboard and another key on the stick and it works normally

Thanks The Basilisk, I had tried the testing grounds, same issue, when you mentioned it this time it gave me the idea to try what improbable things might be left, and it worked!

Thanks martian, I don't usually follow the updates in detail, but was interesting read, it removed one more variable

Basically just remember to try and keep your reticle on the mech rather'n just in the red box, and you should still be good for lock on missiles.

2 bips for a hard lock, 1 for a soft lock.
No LOS - more kills, LOS - more damage (IS LRMs)

BTW, played tier 1 with the stick for almost 2 years, worked quite well actually. (Lost my ranking because I wasn't on the game from late 2018)

Until last year, the tier system was tuned so that progression was more of a function of matches played than performance.
