That issue is with power creep on weapons.. i noticed the phoenix hawk was a one shot core as well, nearly all mediums and heavies suffer from the crazy high damage.

"crazy high damage" and "big alphas" have been in the game since 2017, there is nothing new there.

If you don't stand still you won't get one-shot.

The PHX build properly has 53 armour / 23 structure pre-skill tree = 81pts. Add in decent skill tree and it is confortably over 90pts.

There are barely any builds in the game (that have existed since 2017 mind you) that can deliver that large of an Alpha in one go. Even 60pts if you count just the armour+decent skill tree.

Anything that can deliver 60pt+ is generally in the laser department. Lasers that large have around 1sec duration, usually more. That requires extremely accurate aim and that is very rare in current MWO.

The only way that you are getting one-shot or cored is if you are standing completely still and not twisting.

It is therefore not a mech issue and solely a player issue.

This is vague as hell, but I've picked up a linebacker and I've never been smashed so hard in any other mech. No matter what build i put in it, I'm open CT in this mech legitimately within one fire exchange.

I can play almost any other slower or fatter mech and it's not as bad - is there something really wrong that I don't know about the LB?

They have the same problem, as Thunderbolts. They're considered to be Heavies, but they're actually oversized Mediums. They have Heavy 'Mech tonnage, but this tonnage is taken by fixed oversized engine, so their armor and firepower aren't that big. You should take this facts into account. From one POV you're in Heavy 'Mech, so you expect it to be a little more tanky, but it isn't. From other POV you're fast, but don't forget, that your size doesn't allow you to abuse lag shield, so you're easy target anyway.

It's common problem of Clan 'Mechs. They have fixed engine, so one would expect problems with how optimal it is. But in most cases it's almost perfect. There is just small number of outliers. Linebaker is one of them. Overall I think, that it's lost opportunity. It would be much more interesting, if different variants would have different fixed engines. This would differentiate them by roles a little bit more, so they would make more sense and omnipod switching would be little bit more interesting.

It's a clan mech, so it's going to made of paper to begin with. 65 tons as well, so better off treating it as a medium. Most meta builds run hot on it as well.

BUT!

The main bread and butter is it's speed that's unrivaled by most mechs and a pretty low profile. I'd run either something that deletes you in a brawl or a laser vomit build. If you choose the latter, hit and run and avoid trades. Hug something taller or heavier and stay somewhat in the rear if you can. Just my opinion

Don't run from a linebacker, it is faster than a quickdraw. It is faster than the 55ton IS, it is faster than a thunderbolt.
It is a medium/light mech hunter and you can not run away from It. All depends on the map and distance to the team.
Even a light mech will not be able to run away from it without being shot in the back.

Survival?

your issue is equal of the japanese during ww2

Isssue = You think you are immortal

The japanese army fought poorly equipped warriors whereas they had no antitank weapons.

But every encounter with another tank end up with major lossses because they took every single opportunity.

2014 rly dire could do 2x gauss 2x lpl 6xerml straight from clan release and no quirks or skilltree extra HP, those came later if I remember correctly.

Linebacker so awesome. On paper it looks HOT. 100ish kph and can boat but we might see 1 every 10-20 games. I agree with OP it is simply lacklustre. I know I need to learn the default tryhard twisty-wisty. But it still sucks. If it didnt it would be ya know actually popular and seen in games.

you really got to run it as if it were a light or medium. that means hit and runs and flanking. some mechs make good turrets, but this is not one of them. keep it moving.

Twisting isn't tryhard, it's moving your mouse left and right. You can do it, I know you can! Also Linebacker used to be very popular before Cauldron patch. It's probably less popular now simply because there are other, newer options to try.

Several posts ago, OP already found out he forgot to assign about 20 points of CT armor. But hey, dont you guys let reading comprehension collide with theorycrafting....
