I am a recent joiner of the game and love it! I went to paint my favorite mech today, an HBK-4P(C), and found out that it will cost 3k MC! That is $15 if I buy the credits. I refuse to pay that kind of money just for a paint job, especially when there are multiple mechs I would like to paint.
If you were to lower the cost, you would sell more.

Camo patterns come in one-shot and unlock versions. Unlocks are a permanent purchase that's always available for all variants of the chassis, one-shots are only for the individual mech and are lost if you switch to a different camo, but you can switch the colors at will. The monthly events also normally award a camo pattern for the month's mech if you complete all the goals.
The expensive parts of painting mechs are colors and decals. Both of those are permanent unlocks - ie if you buy a given color or decal, you can use it for any and all mechs from that point at no extra cost. PGI has been including at least one color in most of the monthly events over the past year, there's a handful of "basic" colors you unlock during your Cadet phase, and the rest periodically go on sale. As or the decals, many of the basic ones are trash drops in supply caches and there's been some in the monthly events as well.
Protip: If you are willing to spend money on unlocking colors, get the first tier of Resistance II pack. It comes with three Resistance colors (black/white/red) and each faction selection comes with six more (first and second tier unlock one faction pick, third and fourth unlock two factions each). Given that you also get mechs and premium time out of the deal, it's way better value for your money than buying the colors for MC
