On occasion I see some mechs with what looks like a drone orbiting them a couple of meters above the mech.

What are those?

That’s pressing F3 (default key binding) and using the 3rd person drone,

That is the 3rd person camera.

It was a big kerfuffle when they added it. Turned out not to matter all that much.

That would be the Beagle active probe.

When I first started playing I though they were enemy UAVs, and let me tell you, my teammates weren't impressed with my trying to shoot them down.

No, it's the 3rd person camera drone. It has nothing to do with Beagle Active Probe. You'll see it anytime someone presses F3.

An added bit: Everyone can see it when it is active. Trying to hide with it on doesn't work. But it is fun to act like it's an enemy uav and go trigger happy on it to see if you can prank team mates into shooting at it.
