Like the title asks: Are there any pluses to joining a Unit? Or is it just a social thing?

I got a random invite to a unit- They said I impressed them during a QP match (huh? what??)

Good bunch of people. I've dropped with them as a group a few times in QP. They taught me A LOT!

Haven't dropped with them yet in Faction Play, I usually do that on my own when I can sneak in on the last few open slots and
don't get bumped for a premade group. I SUCK at FP but have picked up a few things there.

So yeah I'd say joining a GOOD unit will help someone with the learning curve of this game

(By good I mean a unit that wants to help you learn all the in's and out's of the game and playing as a team)

Social / People to drop with.

If you pick a unit that also actually have decent knowledge you can learn a lot about the small nuances and mechanics within the game pretty fast/easily. That said there are a number of units that spam invite and unfortunately spread 4-5yo information and mislead new recruits/players with bad information, gameplay advice etc.

I would suggest posting in the correct area on the MWO Comp discord if you are interested.

https://discord.gg/c5rtA2AnPq

Most units there (from casual to high skill) generally know / understand the game well enough without the misinformation spreading.

In a good Team, you learn from each other, and everyone gets MWO better!

When other Team members do well (they post their memorable battle results), you may ask them what mech/layout they were using, etc.

Other Team members may make suggestions to the mech weapons/equipment layout for improvement (it worked for me).

When other Team members do very well in their Hero mech or Special Variant, it may even entice you to procure the same ;)

Oh, and our Team reminded us that there was a Christmas 2021 special code for redemption, which I've completely missed! :)

Mostly social though.
May met some good fellas you would like to drop together sometimes. Sometimes you could learn new things while sometimes you could teach new tricks. And increase your survivability and chances to win if belong and drop with an unit.

I also got randomly invited by my unit but it were a good decision from me to accept that. Tons of new fun! Only if I could lure some of them into FP! Posted Image

Hmmm, good for you. When you shared it on the forums I wondered where you knew about that. Now know.

Apparently it was from MWO marketing emails sent to your email account...according to our Team members...

Since I've elected not to receive marketing emails, did not get that free mech email...

Anyways, changed to "receive marketing emails" from now on...
Alas, the (rare) possible allure of free mech emails... ;)

Ya you can play in tier 1 matches every day and get smashed by best players in the game lol I still would do it playing with other people is what makes online games fun. You can work as a "small team" and come up with plans and other fun stuff.

Only down side is PGI stupid 4 man limit. It makes joining a group really hard. I wish they do 8man and anyone over 4 goes to the other side.

Its good to play with people. A Unit is part of that. But there's also lots of groups and discord servers organized around different timezones and stuff. Generally if you like someone, its good to add them as a friend, try to group up, etc. This game's community is much better than most. Take advantage of it!

No not really..

Most units are trying to scavenge players but never seem to appear again after you join.. I tend to avoid units as my timezone is off and no one is ever in them after a while.

Sorry, can't let this be the last word here.
It's really not remotely surprising to me to see this level of cynicism and contempt for other players coming from you.

There are lots of reasons to join a unit, chief among them that you get to play a fun game with your friends. Its as simple as that.

Possibly making friends? This is like the strangest question to need to ask.

Making friends in a game where there are zero social tools to talk to them.. The only time we can talk is at the match which annoys other players.. and trying to use discord and MWO at the same time produces feedback, not to mention all the malware discord gives you..

Joining a unit ensures there are multiple other players to drop Scorches with. Thats all the reason needed for anything, ever.

Which is why you join a unit. So you can have friends. That you play the game with.

Never once has discord given me malware. Dont click on suspicious links.

You clearly don't play well with others, so you think nobody else should either. That seems a little silly to me.
