To get the better out the mechs, you need like 4/5 action keys.
It s a bit sad, most people can't use heavier mechs because they don't have the hardware
required to do so.
("Gaming" mouse)

Of course you can bind keyboard keys, but tht does feel a bit weird to aim with one hand, and shoot with the other .
(except for LRM or wasting MG ammo).

Basically that does render competitive gameplay dependent on hardware.

Nah, I disagree. Less than 1% of my ~400 mechs require more than 3 buttons. Most are good with 2.

You can get some mice with extra buttons fairly cheap. Good wireless gaming mice can be expensive but even those have come down and isn't required.
A lot of comp players I know don't like using a lot of extra buttons on the mouse because it messes with their aim. Also a lot don't usually use all the weapon groups.
Less used weapon groups can work on keyboard, try playing with it more and you will probably get used to it.

Only fancy feature of my gaming mouse I use in this game is sensitivity change when popping advanced zoom on and trying to nail specific components 1000++ meters away. I don't know does this require "fancy" mouse to do rly but I got those buttons and I'm using those.

All I need for mwo is a cheap $10 keyboard and 2 button mouse combo. "Gaming" bah! I'll keep my money thanks. Maybe you want to buy my new "gaming" eye patch for elite sniping? Only $350.

It's tricky with having to bind consumables as well. One thing I found was that it was easier to bind "activate air strike", "activate coolshot" etc instead of individual consumable slots. Four easily reachable buttons not including left and right mouse click are the minimum for me. Though I only use 3 weapon groups for basically all my 'Mechs, the third group is usually activated with left shift.

I don't think you need a lot of mouse buttons to succeed in this game. My wireless gaming mouse has two buttons and a wheel that doesn't click, and I do just fine with it.

Just use wheel up/down for night/heat vision, and right/left for weapon groups 1/2.

i got a g604. has a lot of buttons, 9 that are usable (more if i want to give up dpi selection). its enough to have a button for every group and turbos for 3 of them. but you really only need 3 or 4. if your mixed build gets too exotic, it becomes less effective. and if you have a boat, one or two groups is usually enough. support weapons like tag/narc sometimes require a fourth button, but i find id rather use those hardpoints for other weapons.

the thing thats good about this particular mouse is you can dial in the dpi very accurately and can adjust the sensitivity on the fly. thats a feature that is sometimes available on budget mice, but is usually not implemented well. that said you can make do on a $10 gaming mouse. a fancy mouse does not fix bad aim, and a cheap mouse wont make good aim any worse. this mouse was a gift, i probibly would not have spent this much for myself.

I have my mouse and a Motospeed K-24 keypad with a subset of commands on it.

It has 20 command keys on it but I've changed the keycaps to distinguish the controls and used individual RGB lighting.

You should be able to pick it up for anywhere between $US20 and $US50.

I've been meaning to make a post about how I set it up.

You can get a Logitech g502 HERO mouse for $39 USD on Amazon, it's not like "fancy" mice are expensive

My simple rule of thumb: if you're using more than 3 weapons groups you're doing it wrong

That gives you a left, right, and middle click to work with.

However I use consumables from the keyboard

2 buttons should usually be enough. I tend to have a third for some tertiary use like arm lasers for shooting down UAV's but that certainly doesnt require a MMO mouse to perform.

A good mouse is still a very good idea to get, the ergonomics of a well designed mouse alone are worth paying at least 30-60€ for. I have a gaming mouse at work for that very reason.

Wouldn't need anything more than a reasonable mouse if PGI would code TAG to be switchable On/Off rather than having to hold another button down :(

The thumb buttons on my mouse are nice for cool shot and a strike. But yeah most of my builds only need two fire groups sometimes only one.

I've been using an A4Tech Opto 429, now upgraded to an X710 since the 429 was no longer repairable. Cost me around $25, if that's bank-breaking for you then you've got bigger problems than performance in an old online shooter.

Look up Red Dragon MMO mouse on ebay. Super cheap and a amazing mouse. I have two. Easily as good as razor or Logitech and only a third of the price.

Mines lasted me 3 years so far.
